On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foes haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, oer the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the mornings first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battles confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the wars desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heavn rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: In God is our trust.
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Bible in a Year:
Am I my brothers keeper?
A marine biologist was swimming near the Cook Islands in the South Pacific when a 50,000-pound humpback whale suddenly appeared and tucked her under its fin. The woman thought her life was over. But after swimming slowly in circles, the whale let her go. Its then that the biologist saw a tiger shark leaving the area. The woman believes the whale had been protecting herkeeping her from danger.
In a world of danger, were called to watch out for others. But you might ask yourself, Should I really be expected to be responsible for someone else? Or in Cains words: Am I my brothers keeper? (Genesis 4:9). The rest of the Old Testament resounds with the thunderous response: Yes! Just as Adam was to care for the garden, so Cain was to care for Abel. Israel was to keep watch over the vulnerable and care for the needy. Yet they did the oppositeexploiting the people, oppressing the poor, and abdicating the calling to love their neighbors as themselves (Isaiah 3:1415).
Yet, in the Cain and Abel story, God continued to watch over Cain, even after he was sent away (Genesis 4:1516). God did for Cain what Cain should have done for Abel. Its a beautiful foreshadowing of what God in Jesus would come to do for us. Jesus keeps us in His care, and He empowers us to go and do likewise for others.
Who has God entrusted to your care? How have you embraced that responsibility? How have you tried to evade or avoid it?
Compassionate God, thank You for Your care for me. You keep me and watch over me. Help me to do the same for others.
Hi Kathy!
Greetings to all at the Canteen!
To all our military men and women, past and present,
THANK YOU
for your service!
A cousin was doing the genealogy of Mr. Key to see if she was related. Got close but inconclusive. It is amazing who people find in their ancestry. Don’t do it, it is addictive.
Mrs. L recently retired from teaching choral music to middle schoolers.
Her mid-September lesson was always on the history of the National Anthem.
I hope her successor has picked up that torch!

Has anyone heard Dave Bray (formerly of Madison Rising) sing the National Anthem??? Dave is a Navy veteran (Corpsman with Marines in Afghanistan)...
He sings the ONLY non-traditional version that I like...It is amazing and raises goosebumps along with the video...

6/19/2020 - Protesters ripped down the statue of Francis Scott Key, the author of America's Star Spangled Banner, in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
To Anacreon in heaven where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition
That he their inspirer and patron would be,
When this answer arrived from the jolly old Grecian:
"Voice, fiddle and flute no longer be mute.
I'll lend you my name and inspire you, to boot.
And besides, I'll instruct you, like me, to entwine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's vine."

I feel the war of 1812 was a forgotten war, we fought hard, they fought hard, hell, they burnt the capitol down, but we never quit.
How's everyone doing this morning?
