~ The Star Spangled Banner ~
Written by Francis Scott Key (1814)

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

The War of 1812 had been a particularly nasty conflict with the British. They had burned down the Capitol and the White House in Washington, and were set on taking the port of Baltimore, which was protected in part by Fort McHenry, just to the south.

On September 7th, 1814, during the build-up to the attack on Baltimore, two Americans, Colonel John Skinner and a lawyer and part-time poet by the name of Francis Scott Key, had gone out to one of the British ships. They had come to negotiate the release of Dr William Beanes, a friend of Key who had been seized following the attack on Washington. The British agreed, but all three had learned too much about the forthcoming attack on Baltimore and so were detained by the British on board the frigate Surprise until it was over.

The attack started on September 12th, 1814, and after an initial exchange of fire, the fleet withdrew to form an arc just outside the range of Fort McHenry's fire.

Skinner, Beanes and Key watched much of the bombardment from the British deck. The major attack started in heavy rain on the morning of September 13th. Just under three miles in the distance the three men caught glimpses of the star-shaped fort with its huge flag - 42ft long, with 8 red stripes, 7 white stripes and 15 white stars, and specially commissioned to be big enough that the British could not possibly fail to see it from a distance.

In the dark of the night of the 13th, the shelling suddenly stopped. Through the darkness they couldn't tell whether the British forces had been defeated, or the fort had fallen.

As the rain cleared, and the sun began to rise, Key peered through the lifting darkness anxious to see if the flag they had seen the night before was still flying. And so it was that he scribbled on the back of an envelope the first lines of a poem he called Defense of Fort M'Henry.

O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming

Yep, we both have rotten luck when it comes to rain, don’t we? LOL

It won’t be anything like Dorian. At least not now as it hits Bermuda. It’ll get a lot stronger mid-week while it’s out over the ocean away from any land. Thank goodness for that.

Josh didn’t go to Bermuda. He lives in MS right now and is waiting for Sally to come to his front porch.

A very pleasant good Monday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks, Kathy for this informative thread about the anthem that everyone SHOULD stand for as I always did before every sporting event I attended.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Oh, that’s cool. He’ll have some good reports I’ll bet. I never saw any of his stuff on Laura, but I do know he was there.

We just have the worst luck with rain. Have we jinxed each other? LOL!

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

I imagine all of us here are like you, standing for the national anthem. We had proper upbringings and have respect for the flag and our country that it stands for. Disgusting that there are those who don’t.

I hope you and Gizmo had a good time yesterday. Did he wear your feet down to nubs dragging you all over creation? :-)

There’s been a slight shift in the predicted path and it will pass almost directly over his house.
He does have a video on his YT channel of footage he got from Laura. He also has some footage of Dorian. That one made my hair stand on end.

We must HAVE jinxed each other regarding rain. LOL! We do have some rotten luck with it.

If you’re still awake, you should take a quick peek at Manitoba. The aurora is awesome tonight. I’ve been popping back to the computer periodically to check it out and grab a few scaps.

Well, I don't know if you've seen it, but here in SW OK we've had hazy skies from all of those fires on the West Coast. We've been fortunate to get the sun, albeit light at times.

But, in any event, Gizmo and I had fun at Comanche Lake yesterday. We did see some families out there also. Here are the pics from yesterday.

Just peeked in to the Manitoba cam. Wow! Right now there’s nothing, but I went back and it was exploding!

I’m gonna have to give it up pretty soon. It’s been a long day and taking a nap around here is like trying to sleep in an airport. So much noise. LOL

See ya tomorrow!

Oh no! You’re getting smoke too? I hadn’t heard about it.
It makes it hard to be outside. :-(

Gizmo didn’t seem to mind though. He found something to roll in so life is good. LOL

Glad you took a peek. It was really crankin’ for a while. Best aurora in a while, though there could have been other big blasts that couldn’t be seen due to clouds. It’s been cloudy up there most of the summer.

I’m surprised you were up as late as you were. Getting a nap can’t be easy.

I hope the winds shift so there isn’t a lot of smoke tomorrow so y’all can enjoy some time outside.

No, we're not getting fires. What we're getting is smoke yes from the fires. The jet stream is what brings these hazy things into our area.

That is why it hasn't been as sunny as it should have been. It does make it hard though, I agree. :-(

I understood you’re getting smoke, not fires. I just didn’t realize it had travelled that far. But there are a LOT of fires burning right now and it won’t surprise me if it makes it over here before all’s said and done.
It would be so nice if it would rain and put the fires out.

You are very welcome, Kathy...I, myself, don’t care at all for non-traditional versions....EXCEPT for this one...Bray is a patriot...I hate he isn’t with Madison Rising any longer, But I’ll always keep a copy of this National Anthem...

Goooood mornin' from beautiful Jackson Hole, WY.
Or at least it would be without the smoke haze.
California's nightmare has moved east.
Even so, it's still lovely here.
Everyone is off doing their own thing this morning.
So I'm lingering at tea. Join me?
We can let spel pour.
Hope all y'all have a Mahv'lus Monday!
...and a Wonderful Week!
(((hugs)))
