This week's death toll from fires in Oregon, Washington and California now stands at 18, as at least 100 major fires burn in 11 western states. As flames push closer to the city of Portland, the mayor has declared a state of emergency — and state officials say they're now preparing for a "mass fatality incident."
More than half a million people — 12% of the state's population — have fled from their homes in Oregon and mass evacuations are underway across the region. Oregon's governor said Thursday that dozens may be missing in her state.
The monstrous fires are moving so quickly that they're overwhelming fire crews.

Maybe it will be like the Great Fire of London in 1666. Although it was devastating, it cleansed the city that had been ravaged by the plague the year before, and it eliminated a large number of old buildings which allowed the city to be rebuilt with better planning.
Tell that to the king time freeper who lost everything but the clothes she was wearing and her cat. Sometimes this place disgusts me. But go ahead and urge on peoples tragedies......

Around Medford, where it is reported 600 homes were lost (although I don’t know the details), it would have been a mix of conservatives and liberals. The kind of place where you might see both Trump flags flying off pickups and lbtq banners within the same town. But out in the undeveloped forest, where most of the conflagration is occurring, it is neither conservative nor liberal. The parts around Portland that are threatened are not Portland proper but outlying suburbs. Again, a mix of political types.
The worst part of the fires were her fault.

I am in N Nevada-—a very long way from Portland & Medford. We have been smoked over here for 26 days, with SOME clearing on past Tues.Wed due to low pressure that put snow into Denver.
When I say smoked over-—I mean that sometimes, I didn’t have 1/2 mile of visibility.
High desert can burn, but we don’t have the forests.
