Oregons house speaker Tina Kotek (D.) defended her staffer who was arrested in Portland this weekend for interfering with police during a riot.
Kristina Narayan, Koteks legislative director, was arrested along with 58 others during a demonstration that broke out Saturday night in which rioters threw firebombs, rocks, and mortars toward police officers. Kotek, who is also on the board of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, defended her staffer for practicing "freedom of expression."
"Freedom of expression is the foundation of our democracy. Every personincluding members of my staffhas the right to stand up for what they believe and engage in nonviolent resistance," Kotek said. "Kristinas experience is similar to what other Portlanders have experienced over the last few months. We need peace and accountability."
Neither Koteks office nor the DLCC responded to a request for comment. David Abrams, deputy executive director of the Republican State Leadership Committee, said Kotek's comments were "shameful."
"There isnt anything peaceful about whats happening in Portland," Abrams said. "Speaker Koteks tone-deaf comments dont even acknowledge the destruction, fear, and despair rioters like her staffer have caused by fanning the flames of violence in American cities. Its shameful, and yet somehow remains par for the course in todays Democratic Party."
Nearly 150 emergency calls to Portland police were left on hold Saturday night as officers were pulled off patrol to respond to the riot, according to a Portland Police Bureau report.
Kotek isn't the only Oregon Democrat who has been soft on the riots in Portland. Earlier this summer, Oregon congressman Earl Blumenauer said that Portland wasn't out of control, but rather, "there are some people who have strong feelings." And Portland mayor Ted Wheelerwho is moving on account of rioters repeatedly targeting his condo buildingsaid his strategy for addressing the violence was to just let it "burn itself out."
Saturday marked the 100th consecutive day of protests in Portland, which began in May after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Kotek defended her staffer for practicing “freedom of expression.”
Did she defend the police for exercising their freedom of arrest?
Tina Kotex is an elfin muncher of rug.
If the situation were reversed and this State Rep would have been GOP, she would have resigned and out the door before the news broke.
Did the Speaker Kotek defend her (protester) for “freedom to destroy the property of others”?
My freedom of expression would involve ventilating lots of ANTIFA.
Where is *freedom of expression* found in the Constitution?
Its the polices form of freedom of expression.
Tina Kotek
Oregon deserves all this because of the loons they have elected over the years.
Would sne feel the same if people stormed the legislature and expressed themselves?
By the standards of the Democrats and MSM, mobs are “mostly peaceful”. After all, it is usual in a riot situation for a chosen few to actually lob material in the direction of others, start fires, and physically attack others. Most people are there to provide (im)moral support.
I would hope some FR legal beagle would jump in here. If three people participate in robbing a store and some person is hurt aren’t all people who participate in the robbery subject to being charged with the assault on the person hurt. Even if one of the three is killed, aren’t the other two subject to at least manslaughter charges? Why wouldn’t the bystanders at a riot be considered as participating in throwing the Molotov cocktails?
Maybe this can be done to her house. Freedom of expression and all that.
She needed a Billy Club shampoo for helping burn down buildings and mugging innocent victims.
I think I see a hair stuck between her teeth.
“Where is *freedom of expression* found in the Constitution?”
According to a brief at Cornell University: “The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. ... It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely.” This defines expression of speaking, not throwing firebombs or hitting people. That is a criminal act.
The problem with slander or liable is that it is the responsibility of the harmed to prove that it was done intentionally. And you’d be surprised how stupid people can become. Mind turns into jello...like Hilly.
