Donald Trump's nonstop lies, together with his endless cries of "fake news" and "hoax," make the role of media fact checkers more important than ever. Unfortunately, on the crucial issue of Social Security, too many of them are furiously defending Trump from his own words.
Instead of acting as a check on Trump's lies, they act like bullied children seeking to appease. They provide him cover, grade him on a curve, and give him every benefit of the doubt while denying that same leniency to Joe Biden and others. This is an extreme disservice in the lead-up to the election, muddying the debate over an issue about which voters care deeply....

“Look at the controversy over ending the Bush tax cuts, which would only affect a small portion of taxpayers,” Altman says. “In this case, if you propose restoring the payroll tax down the road, you’d have to double the rates on workers making minimum wage. This is being sold as temporary, but it’s not likely to work out that way.”

I agree, but that was in big city newspapers, and not so much in small town papers and when there was less dominance of tv news.

I majored in communications (emphasis journalism) in the years spanning Watergate. There was a huge sea change between pre-Watergate and post-Watergate students. Prior to 1973, the attitude among my fellow students was gathering and publishing information in as neutral a viewpoint as possible and letting others sort out the consequences. After Watergate there were many students who aspired to be Bernstein/Woodward crusaders toppling powers-that-be. I think that latter attitude is now fully flowered in today’s media.

Since this article is complete BS, it got me wondering what is the criteria for becoming a ‘fact checker’?
for most professions these day there are some level of certification that a person actually knows what they are doing before being hired and given a title
now we have completely unknown cretons that ae labeled as fact checker without any vetting on the part of the public. We are supposed to just accept that fact checkers aid it was not true so therefore. . .
So now we have part time ANTIFA members and pat time runners in the news rooms being given lap tops and told to ‘fact check’ everyone, but remember we are one paying you so. . .
So we now have the most dishonest, lying media the world has ever seen and they are doing fact checking on themselves and we are supposed accept this pile of bull
Demorats always go after the Social Security issue to scare Seniors every election...same Drumbeat they never tire beating.
They will always preach one way or another about the biggest revenue sources out there.....Social Security, Education, Healthcare, Welfare etc etc...all the places they use and abuse for their revenue flow.

The opening of America’s eyes to the media’s perfidy has been a long, drawn-out process. I didn’t see it until the early 1980s, but looking back in history, there was a crapload of fake news during the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal was entirely the creation of fake news.
FDR and “Give’em Hell” Harry were protected by fake news.
For that matter, Thomas Jefferson was persecuted by a lying fake news weasel.
Robbing from Peter to pay Paul is not new to the Federal Government...... Otherwise Pelosi and her cohorts wouldn’t be holding out in order to obtaine money to bail out California and New York with the Covid money....to the tune of 300 Billion each I understand.

This should confirm that SS is NOT being short-changed.
What should be obvious is that all their lying is cover for the fact that they have and have offered no policy proposals. That's because their last proposal - to defund the police - and the consequences thereof didn't exactly meet with rave reviews

On a related note, this month is the final month of the quarter that is used to determine SS COLA increase, if any, for next year. I haven’t heard any predictions yet. I’m guessing zero increase.
Why don’t they ever mention that Biden has said through the years that we’ll eventually need to cut Social Security?
