Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Glad you had another nice day. It wasn’t bad here. Mid 80s and low dewpoints. A couple of friends came by to visit this afternoon and we sat out on the patio comfortably. Jobu liked that because he got lots of attention. LOL I just came in form sitting with him and it’s a bit cool now. Felt pretty good.

They’ve changed our 7-day forecast and say it’ll be warmer than they’d predicted all last week. *sigh*

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Did you take Gizmo back to Comanche Lake yesterday?

Are you giving your new microwave a workout yet?

Well, what a way, weather man, to spoil a mood! Jobu is going to be spoiled rotten before long. I’m glad he stayed.

Yeah, it was a little exciting to think we’d have a comfy week ahead. Oh well, it won’t be much longer til fall temps arrive.

They still say next weekend is supposed to be around 80 and that’s great. The county GOP has a Trump flotilla on the big lake here planned for Sat. and that will be fine weather for it.

We REALLY don’t need another cat but Jobu is such a sweetheart we don’t regret his arrival.

The new microwave is working out real well. Been using it to warm our supper as well as bacon for breakfast.

The AC at the local KFC went down yesterday so had to go through the drive thru to get our supper.

Here are some pics from yesterday at Comanche Lake.

At one point during our visit yesterday, the leash slipped from my hands and Gizmo ran towards a lady playing with her dog out at the boat ramp. Thankfully I caught up with him. No harm no foul though. She asked Giz if she wanted to play ball.((LOL))

Microwaves are very handy kitchen gadgets, no doubt.

It sounds and looks like Gizmo had a banner day at the lake. :-)

All those flotillas and bike parades give me hope that everything will be ok. Are you going to go watch it?

No...you had just enough cats, but Jobu adopted you. What else can ya do? :)

I know what I’m going to do. Hit the pillows. Getting up at 8:30 isn’t as bad as 7:30, but it’s still to early for a night owl. LOL!

Indeed I AM going to watch it! They’ll come to the bridge less than a mile from the farm and that will be a great vantage point for pix ..... if I’m able to get a good spot there. I have a feeling it’ll be packed with spectators. I need to ask Hubby if he has any buddies who live along the lake and if so, maybe we can go to their house to watch.

We already had too many cats. LOL! But one more isn’t making much difference at this point. We just hope no more show up. I guess the cat Hubby saw several nights ago moved on since he hasn’t been seen again.

get a good night’s sleep. I hope you have another nice-weather day ahead.

Good morning, E...((HUGS))...you and Gizmo headed to the lake today? He sure does love his time scouting things out and dragging you around. And his nose never gets tired.

Hey there, Kathy.

A little warm but dewpoints are still low so it isn’t too bad. And still low 60s at night, which feels really nice.

They are ROASTING in CA right now. My step-sister lives in Burbank and I heard it was 114 there. My step-brother and his wife moved from L.A. to TN last year so they’re happily missing out on that “fun”.

I wonder why they didn’t have rain in your forecast. That was a big rain system that moved in earlier in the evening. Glad you’ve gotten a nice amount of it at your house.

Small chances for rain here late in the week but we aren’t holding our breath for getting any.

Jobu IS a lucky feller. I initially didn’t bother putting food out for him in hopes he’d leave. He did for two days, then came back. The rest is history. LOL
He’s such a sweet ol’ guy and I have no regrets.
