As a South African immigrant to the United States and a longtime observer of South African politics, I am attuned to the ways in which appeals for racial justice and demands for change can unleash powerful social and political forces.
Granted: I am biased by my particular experience, and the United States is by no means an apartheid state (at least not since 1964). But it is striking to see the United States in 2020 look so much like the failing state that was late-apartheid South Africa—albeit at American scale, and at American speed.
The sudden speed of events has triggered growing warnings of the death of U.S. democracy or even another civil war. But the South African precedent suggests that the future, while certainly challenging, is not quite so dire.
First, it’s useful to identify the parallels so I can’t be accused of a false optimism.
The explosion of protest against racial injustice and police brutality across the United States that followed the killing of George Floyd, and the over-militarized police response to it, mimic the caught-on-tape, globally inspiring demonstrations in 1970s and 1980s South Africa. Like many social movements before and since, they have in common a complex fusion of a majority of nonviolent protesters with violent radicals, outside agitators, and opportunistic looters.
They also share the morally unambiguous objective of ending systemic racism, and they were both propelled by a cascade of political and economic events that pushed this objective from socially marginal to the center of debate. In the United States, those events include Trump’s divisive presidency and the COVID-19 crisis, which disproportionately affected black American communities. In South Africa, they included the 1976 Soweto uprising, a global commodities slump that shook the South African economy, and the end of the Cold War.

Reading this article you would think the Republicans were the slaveholders and that Donald Trump is some kind of Heinrich Himmler white supremacist, when it is simply not true. In fact, the Republicans freed the slaves, were the driving force behind the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, the right for women to vote and the Civil Rights Acts. So this writer ignores that as well as our Constitution and body of law that have addressed racial grievances for 150 years and corrected many sins of the past - with 360,000 white men dying to free the black slaves, at the hands of the Democrat Party.
America is not South Africa, but America could turn into Zimbabwe - which is another tidbit this writer ignores. They chased and murdered the whites out of Rhodesia, turned it into Zimbabwe and then stole all the remaining white farmland. - thank you Robert Mugabe. Rhodesia was the breadbasket of Africa, and Zimbabwe became the basket case of Africa. (Read Peter Godwin on Zimbabwe). So the whites are gone, the farms are destroyed, the nation plunged into starvation, and now there is cholera - but thank God there is no white supremacy. Only a fool wants this outcome - and South Africa has been treading there.
Communists lie, and that is what is behind all these movements. They use race as the gateway, but it is class warfare and even BLM is now being run by a white female communist named Susan Rosenberg (any relation to the writer?) She had been an imprisoned terrorist in the US who was pardoned by Bill Clinton on his last day in office. This is all a drive to change our nation to communism. Reject them. Defeat them. Everything they touch turns to trash. They bring with them war, dissension, hatred and poverty.
BLM is raising hundreds of millions - and what project have they done that have improved black lives? What besides saying the “whole system has to be torn down” or paying protesters to take bus rides?
America is the greatest nation on Earth, and has supplied the most economic opportunity and freedom to the most people, more so than anywhere else on Earth. These bomb throwers are liars, fools, anarchists, and miscreants who have never created wealth nor opportunity, but just basically steal from what others have created under the Orwellian term of “liberating” it. Reject them and keep rejecting them.
If we are not careful we may not be South Africa but we will certainly be someplace we don’t want to be and totally unrecognizable.

Thanks for posting. Confirned what most of us already knew. This is a purposeful, well financed invasion and take over of America. Aftercloreatta lynch called for blood on the streets, ther was very little doubt.
