Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old suspected of fatally shooting at least two people and injuring another during protests in Kenosha over the shooting of Jacob Blake, has been arrested, according to local media reports.
Rittenhouse, 17, was arrested in Illinois and has been reportedly charged with first-degree intentional homicide.
I’m not convinced that he’s likely to be convicted of anything serious. It looks bad if they charge him with an illegal firearm, but I see no evidence of any serious felonies.
He seemed to want to turn himself in, standing there hand's raised. By what happened before then I'm referring to what gave rise to the first confrontation. If the prosecutor can establish that he was provoking the confrontation, and if he confronted a window smasher and fired a "warning shot" in the air, he may have a serious problem. Which having the firearm illegally contributes to. If he provoked the initial disagreement, self defense goes out the window. Despite the fact that the shootings in isolation look like self defense to me. Here's hoping he didn't say anything on social media accounts.
When I saw the video clips, I thought the kid did very well.
He was not just randomly shooting people, spraying bullets everywhere.
It seemed that he did not fire until it was clear that he had to.
I thought it showed great presence of mind in a very fast paced, dangerous situation.
I expect GoFundMe to sandbag the guy by drawing in funds then pulling the plug and return funds. Far less that 100% sent for him will still make it back to him via a 2nd venue.
What does any of that have to do with a self defense claim?
Looks like the good guys needed a “buddy system” so one of them didn’t get cut out of the herd and corralled.

This 17-year-old white kid, after being chased down the street and violently assaulted with a skateboard, and having a pistol pulled on him (by a felon-in-possession), is charged as an adult for premeditated murder, within < 24 hours.

Misplaced clauses can be a pain.
Breaking the law to put himself in that situation may undermine his legal claim of self-defense. Some FReeper lawyers have pointed this out in similar cases over the years.
