Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

Ruston, LA here. Midway between Shreveport and Monroe. Rain, blustery winds, lights have flickered a couple of times. I see quite a bit of power outage south of here on the power company outage map. I agree, not as great a storm surge as feared, which is good news.

im sure down by the coast that Holly Beach is swept clean..just like in Rita...but this 40 mile inland non sense.....greatest surges ever recorded, Hurricane Camille and Katrina at most went 2 miles inland...

I have personally seen damage and destruction from storm surge south of Sulphur, La from Rita more than 25 miles from the coast.
The water at my friend’s house was 4 feet high, with waves on top. They were forced to climb into their attic to ride it out.
After that, the moved to north side of Sulphur.

How did you decide 1-2 miles inland and that's it? The angle of approach, location, slope of the continental shelf and terrain elevation also determines surge with inland flooding. A powerful storm will empty bays (example Tampa and Sarasota Bays with Irma) on one side of the storm, while piling (surge) water at the coast and inland on the dirty side. When storm winds offshore on the dirty side of the storm push water onshore-and prevent the natural flow of rivers and streams to empty-water piles up.
Your simple dismissal of all else tells me you really don't understand storm surge at all.
Agree that the videos with the water funnels (water too calm for hurricane-Tik Tok) and the oil rig are suspect.

again...the 2 greatest storm surges ever recorded in the western hemisphere ...Hurricane Camille and Katrina both happened on the same Mississippi coast. Mississippi Sound has a very shallow shelf...the water really piles up....but both never went more than 1 to 2 miles inland. Read the after action reports...study aerial photographs..i visited Wade Guice, Harrison County civil defense director during Camille...we spent the entire day in Pass Christian..Long Beach...Gulfport. In Camille, the only true cat 5 to directly hit the mainland, everything within 6 blocks of the ocean was destroyed...thats it, 6 blocks. All surge damage stopped after the railroad tracks, about a mile form shore. Katrina surge damage actually went past the railroad tracks, something most thought would never happen...eclipsing Camille. This ridiculous claim of 40 mile from shore storm surge was absurd. Dont think the NHC isnt political...media was already saying Trump should cancel his speech tonight...combined with their global warming fantasies...i know bs when i hear it.
You are comparing apples and oranges.
The eye of Hurricane Laura came ashore essentially due south of Lake Charles. For that reason, there was no storm surge in Lake Charles. The storm surge was east of the eye. Lake Charles was in, not east of the eye. Holly Beach was in, not east of the eye as Hurricane Laura came ashore. Because the storm came in due south of the above named population centers, water was not piled up into Calcasieu Lake, Moss Lake, Prien Lake, and Lake Charles. If the storm approach had been a few miles W of named population centers at landfall, we would be having a different discussion. Fortunately, the worst storm surge occurred in low population Wildlife Refuges and Conservation Areas.

Saw a report from Holly Beach. Wind damage for sure, but no apparent surge damage. Stilt structures are upright.
