Researchers Doubt That Certain Mental Disorders Are Disorders At All
Forbes ^ | 8/11/2020 | Alison Escalante

What if mental disorders like anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder aren’t mental disorders at all? In a compelling new paper, biological anthropologists call on the scientific community to rethink mental illness. With a thorough review of the evidence, they show good reasons to think of depression or PTSD as responses to adversity rather than chemical imbalances. And ADHD could be a way of functioning that evolved in an ancestral environment, but doesn’t match the way we live today. Adaptive responses to adversity

Mental disorders are routinely treated by medication under the medical model. So why are the anthropologists who wrote this study claiming that these disorders might not be medical at all? They point to a few key points. First, that medical science has never been able to prove that anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are inherited conditions.

Second, the study authors note that despite widespread and increasing use of antidepressants, rates of anxiety and depression do not seem to be improving. From 1990-2010 the global prevalence of major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders held at 4.4% and 4%. At the same time, evidence has continued to show that antidepressants perform no better than placebo.

This is a good article which supports my own observations. One of our kids was initially diagnosed with ADHD and we refused to medicate. He is doing quiet well now academically -- but he has a lot of energy and requires less sleep than his siblings. We had to fight with school board who wanted him to be diagnosed and medicated. Conformity is such a big deal these days that we are not willing to tolerate any deviation from the norm.

Ok. But put homosexuality, transexuality, sexual dimorphism etc all back on the list.

I have often thought it is rather normal and healthy to have anxiety in terrible situations, ptsd after terrible trauma, and be sad/depressed when things are awful.

What kind of robot wouldn’t?

It’s like everyone thinks there is something wrong with you when you want to stare into space after you have lost loved ones, or jump at a backfire after leaving a war Zone, or are terrified of job loss during a recession when there is no one else to pay the bills.

What we do need are good coping skills to deal with these thought patterns and extreme stresses. We need support and love and encouragement and help. I don’t think we need to be told we are mentally ill.

PTSD has been proven irrefutably to cause permanent changes in brain chemistry.

Oh. And how about “addiction”. Alcoholics, druggies, etc. All given excuses as having “diseases”.

But, I don’t think “can’t prove it’s inherited” should be required. Many diseases, real ones, aren’t inherited?

YES!!! This (finally) cracks the door open into teaching rather than drugging for so-called “mental disorders.” They’re completely physical, but drugs can’t help create new neural pathways in the brain.

Does this mean we can re-open the mental hospitals and put the bums on the street in institutions where they belong?

TDS and BDS are, however, still on the list.

Most Depression, even at least some manic depression with cycles of increasing amplitude are vitamin D deficiencies. I have found this to be the case with four women, one being my daughter, with manic depressive cycles that I induced to take the D3 supplement for to cure or avoid flu and colds. Their changes in personality got me to research depression on the net and I found several sources that say that clinical depression is cured by daily sunshine. One of the women informed me a year after I had given her a bottle of D3 that she wasn’t sad/happy any more and had taken herself off of Methadone successfully. That shocked me until I considered the druggies I knew in my youth. The O and H heads were all night people that never saw the sun and were always depressed which fed into the taking of Heroin and other downers and euphorics. They were all depressed people and night people.

I think you put it very well.

There is also the problem of coping with the human condition outside of the framework of divine revelation. Killing God has consequences.

Attention Deficit Disorder is not a disorder at all.. It’s just a different way the brain is wired.

It used to be that a year of morning was considered the standard. After six months you could do some quiet things if you felt like it but no one was going to push you.

Now?

Two weeks.

If you are sad longer then two weeks you are in a depression.

Sorry but if you are normal and have suffered the loss of a loved one you are going to be sad longer then two weeks. There is going to be a part of you that is sad for the rest of your life.

You will learn to deal with it and adjust but every now and then it will hit you.

My Daughter was declared autistic in 2006, she was six she was put on the aspbergers side of the scale. I chose not to medicate or give into an IEP and the separation the school wanted to do and she ended up home-schooled a bunch of years, I just thought she was really smart and I didn’t believe the crap they were trying to push. Yeah she was a little different growing up socially but musical, math, words, writing and the fact she soaked up everything she wanted to pursue with passion I believe we are blessed.

She is 20 now and I couldn’t be prouder of who she became. She is gonna do good things. My other kids weren’t like that growing up. lol
