Blazing Saddles is currently streaming on HBO Max, along with a new introduction that automatically plays before the Mel Brooks classic begins
TCM host and University of Chicago cinema and media studies professor Jacqueline Stewart provides the intro to Blazing Saddles. She also did the intro for Gone With the Wind.
A little more than three-minutes long, Stewarts intro puts the bigotry and racist language in context, the host saying, as the storyline implies the issue of race is front and center in Blazing Saddles. And racist language and attitudes pervade the film. But those attitudes are espoused by characters who are portrayed here as explicitly small-minded, ignorant bigots. The real, and much more enlightened perspective, is provided by the main characters played by Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder.
The professor is near!

How is it racist to be lookin for som white wimmin?
Communists have zero sense of humor.
Precisely. "Are you not Of The Body?"
I first saw it with my wife and her cousin and his wife. It was a matinee and not many people in the theater. We laughed our heads off all through the movie. By the way, they were Democrats. They really did have a sense of humor at one time.
Wow, what BS is that?
Enlightened perspective? Richard Pryor was one of the writers. The word Nigger is used 73 times, according to one counter. Pryor used the word so often in his routines, watchers became inured to the word. It is only a word.
“Racism” is not the theme of Blazing Saddles. Satire on racism is the theme. GET THE DAMN IDEA?
To have an intro to the movie is a weak, pussy stinkin’ way of a cop out. HBO is pussy whipped.
PS. Glad that I have a DVD of the movie.
Are we to expect that all movies will have an introduction, done by some fake academic, to tell us what the producers, writers and actors meant to do in making the movie?
I’d rather figure that out by myself, Thank you!
HBO MAXI-PADS........
Leftists who are racist themselves dont understand that this is a movie against racism using humor.
Oh please.... (see tag line). Blazing Saddles teaches us how stupid bigotry is. It was a landmark movie of the 1970’s and should be celebrated. It could never be produced now, so let it be. Do not erase this important bt of history.
That’s what carbon offset credits are, indulgences to expatiate the sin of global warming.
I never knew that. The Doctor Gillespie murders is another obscure one.
I recently ordered a copy of UNCONQUERED with Gary Cooper, about the uprising against the British by the chief Pontiac. TCM had to put a disclaimer on it saying the Indians portrayed were not as bad as portrayed.
If you ever read the book THE CONSPIRACY OF PONTIAC by Francis Parkman you will find out the Indians were that bad. So bad they even caused the first school house massacre in North America, the Enoch Brown school massacre.
That’s even more insidious and damaging than pompous, virtue-signaling lectures - that’s rewriting actual history.
Im going to watch it right now and crank it up for my neighbors.
I used to marvel at the fact that some people actually got offended by....were too stupid to understand....that Jonathon Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” was satire. What squares! What morons! It was so obviously satire and it was hilarious.
Well here we are. If you need help understanding that Blazing Saddles is satire......lord help you. By the way, if your intent is to combat racist attitudes, Mel Brooks did it a million times better than you neo Puritans are doing it. He was funny. He made people laugh and see the stupidity of it. You just piss people off with your obnoxiousness.
Hang on while I whip this out.
I have Blazing Saddles on DVD, one of my favorite movies.
Its “well take the N..... and the Ch..... BUT WE DON’T WANT THE IRISH!!!!!!
As somebody who is part Irish, I almost fell out of my chair. :^)
I cant wait to see the new intro to Song of the South!
