This sucks for me, as my favorite band has been Iron Maiden for the last 16+ years. He left a great legacy.

Not my favorite kind of heavy metal, but I know these groups were very popular for decades. Of course I have heard of them. Martin Birch was 71; not super-duper old in the age of Trump, Pelosi and Biden, but some people have long term physical issues to deal with. The body simply wears out.
He struck a good pose in his Karate Gi. Looks like he just finished a Roundhouse Kick.

Monster albums...Ritchie Blackmore’s first album with Man on the Silver Mountain and the Rainbow Rising...BOC Cultasaurus Erectus.
Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
and then Iron Maiden.
Sounds like a dream job.

Well, there he goes again on his own.

And it’s only 2 minutes to midnight so he’ll miss the nuclear holocaust.

RIP

I can only think of one other time Ritchie was smiling much at all and that was a brief second in a video when Deep Purple reunited in 1984. The video for Perfect Strangers to be exact. Love his guitar work even if he takes himself way too serious. And never realized just who all Martin Birch produced for. Sadly Ritchie pushed him out after the Dio years in exchange for Roger Glover who was not terrible, just not as legendary in producer circles is all. Great bassist in his day though.

Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Dio, I yearn for those years. Great music. Fantastic. Jon Lord was such a virtuoso. And to think back to the Perfect Strangers video and song, oh to be a fly on the wall. I think Ritchie is doing a good job with Blackmore’s Night. And the new DP cut Throw My Bones is a current Top 10 for me. The video is pretty original, even if the effects need to be cleaned up a little.

First as an engineer and then as a producer Martin did more to define was heavy metal is than anybody. His influence still looms large on the genre.
