Airport Security Is Finding Loaded Guns In Triple The Number Of Passenger Carry-Ons Compared To Pre-Pandemic Rates

Airport security is finding guns in passenger carry-on bags at triple the rate they did before the pandemic, per the Associated Press — and most of the guns they find are loaded.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers found 15.3 guns for every million people screened in July. This is triple the number of those screened found with guns in July of 2019, at 5.1 per million people, according to the AP.

The TSA screened more than 830,000 passengers Sunday, a number that hasn’t been reached since March 17 as many are still apprehensive about flying due to the virus and events have been shuttered.

15.3 vs 5.1 per million. HOLEEEE CRAP! Where will it end? First, transporting firearms should NOT be an issue. So, are these newbie gun owners who don't know all the rules? Yet.

They are framing it as having something to do with the “pandemic”. March or April would have been “pandemic”. July means riots.

Probably so.

Perhaps some folks on the ‘other side’ who think they are above the rules?

Who the hell is packing in their carry-ons?
Heck, I got dinged for a damned pen knife in my laptop bag 15 years ago - never again.

Couldn’t you just FedEx it to yourself at your destination?

As I understand it, shipping firearms must be done through a firearms dealer, shipped to a firearms dealer at or near your destination.

15.3 vs 5.1 per million.
= = =
A statistician would probably say this is so far down in the noise as to be compared to if a flea farted or not.

Not to demean a flea, just so you know.

I’ve shipped a pistol to Ruger and a rifle to Rock River Arms. Both companies sent me prepaid shipping labels. I dropped the pistol at the local UPS Store. The rifle, I had to actually take to a specific UPS office at the UPS facility. That was a requirement of RRA...they’d sent a list of very specific instructions. Both places, I was given a receipt. I’m in NC, so maybe there’s a difference between states?

Not necessary, my dealer says to ship my Remington to Remington. If you go to their website they provide detailed instructions. Now it's just a matter of getting it done...

By the way, it is COMPLETELY LEGAL to transport firearms in checked baggage in the US, if you are legal to have it at the source and at your destination. I personally have flown with pistols, rifles, and ammunition many, many, many times. There are a set of protocols, which slightly varies among the airlines, which you must follow. Firearms must be locked with a key that ONLY YOU HAVE (NOT a TSA lock), and the magazines and firearm must be unloaded. There’s an inspection by TSA. They have mostly been nice. No problems, ever. I haven’t flown in about 2 years, though.

See my post above. I WILL be armed in states where I am legal to be.

No, that’s actually illegal (states vary in laws, but there are also Federal laws). In order to do so, you must transfer it through a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL)— a gun store.

I watched someone get caught by TSA with a handgun in their pants pocket, and the reaction was amazingly forgiving and polite. It was one of the most conservative cities in the country, and the passenger was embarrassed. The TSA guy told him to wait right there and call a friend to come get the gun. That was it. Very little delay. No charges. No confiscation of the firearm. Just no harm, no foul, and “phone a friend”. No point in naming the city, but it’s nice to know that even in TSA there are normal people.

Seems to be some confusion so I went to the ATF website.

A non licensee (you) may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee (dealer) in any state.

A person may ship a firearm to him or herself in care of another person in the state where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity.

You can not ship a handgun using USPS.
Different states, of course, tack on their own little rules.

You can always ship a firearm in your checked luggage. Just let the agent at the front desk know anf fill out some paperwork.

Thank you.

It did feel kind of odd shipping a weapon, but I figured Ruger and RRA had it figured out. The biggest fear I had was that someone along the path of shipment would develop sticky fingers. The boxes I shipped in were non-descript, but the labels screamed “GUN!”.

Yup. I know the drill. Easier to just pick one up at your destination. Gun show loophole style. 😂🙌📴
