Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib violated the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 by paying herself a salary from her campaign after securing victory in the 2018 general election, the House Ethics Committee unanimously ruled on Friday.
The Ethics committee found that Tlaib violated FECAs personal use restrictions by paying herself $10,800 from her campaign when she was no longer a congressional candidate in late 2018 and ordered her to repay that amount back to her campaign within one year, the committee said in a report.
The committee determined that the evidence is sufficient to support a determination that a portion of the salary payments that Representative Tlaib received after the 2018 general election was inconsistent with the requirements outlined by [FECA] and its implementing regulations, the report read.
The Committee also recognizes, however, that Representative Tlaibs violation of the applicable restrictions was one of bad timing and not ill intent, the committee added. Representative Tlaib engaged in good faith efforts to comply with the relevant FECA requirements.
The Ethics committee noted that it did not find any evidence that Tlaib sought to unjustly enrich herself by receiving the campaign funds at issue.
The ruling was issued three days after Tlaib secured victory over her Democratic challenger in Michigans primary on Tuesday.
Candidates for federal office like Tlaib are allowed to pull a salary from their campaign as long as it is no more than the amount they made the prior year, according to the Federal Election Commission. Candidate campaign salaries may also continue until the date of the candidates general election, the FEC adds. What’s the point of the ethics committee if nothing results from it though? If this is a legit campaign violation, Barr needs to engage. Otherwise, this is just going to be one of those stories that makes noise for a week or two and then disappears.
Of course they announce it four days after she wins the primary.
“”” paying herself $10,800 from her campaign when she was no longer a congressional candidate in late 2018 and ordered her to repay that amount back to her campaign within one year,””
Boy, that’ll show her who’s the boss.
These idiots wouldn’t know ‘ethics’ if it fell on them from the 10th story!
Slap her hands and tell her not to do it again or a stern letter will follow.
What does this mean?
Normally the RATs, being the majority of the committee, would just toss the whole thing out because being criminals themselves they wouldn’t care about the Talibs crimes and insane statements. However the polling data must be showing that Talib’s insane behavior is losing votes for the Party has a whole. That’s the only reason I could think of that would make the RATs on the committee agree to this.
I was thinking the same thing. Drop the ethics violation bomb AFTER her primary.
Rashida Tlaib violates the laws of nature daily by inhaling oxygen
And?
Or they might have Barr and Durham investigate her and spend millions of tax payer dollars in the process and, who knows, in 10 or 15 years they may indict her and then find her innocent.
Will claim islamophobia; muzzie oppression.
The laws are weak.
Who creates laws?
Why would they ever want to make them strong?
Logical thinking.
I see this as a warning to AOC and the other squad members from Don Pelosi and her capos to keep in line.
The squad is made up of nothing more than four lying Democrats....of course that really applies to most Democrats. The difference here is that two of the squad are outright abusing finance transactions but are protected by none other than the Speaker of the House.
YAWN
I blame her ascendancy on the people of her district. What is up with Michigan?!
So either these so called laws have no criminal penalties or else this lady is once again in the privileged class where she is protected.
