Lots of cell phone coverage of what appears to be the biggest port disaster since Texas City. Hard to believe less than a hundred fatalities as this was far bigger than the Marine Barracks blast. Something of the magnitude of the still mysterious West, Texas explosion during BHO's term.

There will be a lot more fatalities when they get the rubble cleared. Some of these buildings - apartment buildings and offices - were literally obliterated.

They havent even begun the body count, IMO.
That is, of the ones they could find.

I think we will never know the exact number of deaths. I suspect many at ground zero were vaporized. And the long term effects of the nitrogen dioxide and dust and other crap being inhaled.

Plus the bulk cargo port suffered epic destruction. Such a facility operates round the clock so there must have been a lot of port workers blown to bits.

Unless this is a very unpopulated area, and the workers in the area got the day off, I expect that casulties will be ten times this, when all is said and done.

“Officials said the citys hospitals were filled to capacity.”
So, anyone that’s been hurt and isn’t in a hospital already, needs to quarantine for 14 days at home so they can flatten the curve.

"The president of Lebanon said on Twitter that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored in a warehouse for six years without safety measures."A previous shortage of bomb and missle technicians leading to an enormous stockpile of explosive materials.

Neither, I believe, is the case. Everything in Beirut is densely packed near every thing else.

The blast was so loud that people could hear it in Cyprus.
Crikey!
Bad handling, the stuff should have been cut and moved
periodically. But hey, it’s happy where it was...unhunh.
A lot of AN industrial explosions over time so it
wasn’t unknown. just sloppy.

If it is true that this huge dump of nitrate had been left unattended for years then the blast could have been caused by static electric discharge or just chemical deterioration. US liability lawyers are already streaming towards Beirut if Bhopal is any indication.
