People in cities along China's Yangtze River, already swamped with water, are now scrambling to shore up embankments as the world's largest dam faces fast mounting flood pressure...
The Three Gorges Dam spans the Yangtze, Asia's longest river, which has become a raging torrent with storm water pouring into the reservoir of the dam at 60 million litres per second on Monday night.
On Tuesday morning, dam operator the China Three Gorges Group said water flow into the reservoir fluctuated between 50 million and 60 million litres per second.
And the peak flow has not eased, adding more than ten trillion litres to the mega-dam in just 10 days.
All arteries leading from the Yangtze River remain deluged by the third big flood this summer.
The China Three Gorges Group say they plan to hold as much water in the dam as possible to buy time for cities downstream to build up their defences.
According to local reports, the dam's operator has indicated there are 13 days left before the reservoir will fill to the brim.

That would be about August 10th, coinciding with the normally heaviest part of the annual monsoons, in the first half of August.
Seems like Water levels continue to rise behind the dam, despite aggressive releases to already flooded areas downstream.

Now:
Better stock up on food, FReepers. Because if this dam blows, food prices are going to skyrocket.
i hope their dam system fails. and the commie one too.
The source of the Yangtze River is in Tibet.
But the CCP doesn’t believe in karma so ... no worries! :)
Why do the Chinese have to hoard all that water when there are droughts going on in Africa? Its just not fair. They need to export half of that water to Africa right away.
Like so much cheap, toxic Communist Chinese crap, that f*****g damn was shoddily constructed. It’s only a matter of time before it fails.
YIKES!
I’d be interested in the three to five paragraph version of your comment if you care to elaborate.
However, I think I’ll go to sleep before you can write it because I’d rather read it in the morning than have nightmares.
FReegards.
The Azwan Dam holds about three times more water.
I heard on good authority some years ago that the Hoover Dam was designed and built with a Safety Factor of 10.
They wanted to be able to build more...
When this thing fails it will be the greatest human F-up in history brought to us by the chinese communist party. Somehow its got to be Trump’s fault too.
Notable Yangtze River FactsThe Yangtze River is so wide that ocean-going vessels can travel up to 1000 miles inland without any navigational difficulties or obstacles. The river floods every year during the summer, but the waters are always kept in check by the many dikes built to contain the water. At 3950 miles the Yangtze is the longest river to exclusively flow within the borders of one country. The river basin is home to a third of Chinas population which translates to 400 million people who live off the Yangtze. The river is so vital to the economy that it directly accounts for 40% of Chinas GDP. The Yangtze is home to over 350 species of fish out of which 44 are found nowhere else in the world but only on the Yangtze River.
That would be a blessing to the world if it failed. The communist party in China would be utterly humiliated in front of the world.
Their incompetence would be on full display in the failure AND in their response.
It would set them back decades.
60 million liters / second = 2.1 million CFS.
For comparison, the Oroville, California dam was tested at high spillway flow rates after reconstruction. On April 2, 2019 releases of water over the newly reconstructed spillway were at a rate of 8,300 CFS. Releases were increased to 25,000 CFS on April 7, 2019 to test how the spillway performed in higher flows.
The flow at the Three Gorges Dam is almost 1,000 times higher than the test flow rate at Oroville! And the Three Gorges Dam flow is continuous, not a one-day max flow test.
The Good Earth
“That would be about August 10th, coinciding with the normally heaviest part of the annual monsoons, in the first half of August.”
The Moon is Full on August 2nd. Mark that day on your calendars boys and girls...
Some knowledgeable folks have said that this kind of dam should not just catastrophically blow wide open.
If just too much rain comes in however, it could be overwhelmed, with water running around the sides and over the top.
Supposedly, there is some chance for a breach around the side, if there is a structural failure. Of course, with anything made in China, there is also some chance that corners were cut during construction, and that the dam is not actually built up to the design specs.
But even if the dam holds, and it itself is not overwhelmed, there has already been massive flooding downstream, that is of disaster levels.
20% of China’s farmland was reported to be flooded, and more heavy rain is coming Wed/Thursday.
Yeah but then we’d have to spend weeks listening to the same COVID fear mongers predict that food costs here will skyrocket and famine will be cast across the land. I’d love to see God strike his anger down on China but the pearl clutching here is almost not worth it....
Looks like the Erf is NOT running out of fresh water.
“stock up on food, “
Yes, because it would be in our interest to send food/help, along with other countries, if the dam fails. Who wants 100 million or so starving chinese causing major chaos?
