Notable Yangtze River FactsThe Yangtze River is so wide that ocean-going vessels can travel up to 1000 miles inland without any navigational difficulties or obstacles. The river floods every year during the summer, but the waters are always kept in check by the many dikes built to contain the water. At 3950 miles the Yangtze is the longest river to exclusively flow within the borders of one country. The river basin is home to a third of Chinas population which translates to 400 million people who live off the Yangtze. The river is so vital to the economy that it directly accounts for 40% of Chinas GDP. The Yangtze is home to over 350 species of fish out of which 44 are found nowhere else in the world but only on the Yangtze River.
Very interesting, thanks for that info. The CCP must be extremely nervous right now.
Fascinating facts. Thanks.
I arrived at the village of Shuifu, Yunnan Province, China in late September 1976 to start up the steam plant in a new fertilizer factory. It was 1,600 miles upstream from the mouth of the Yangtze at the Pacific Ocean.
Crude barges were towed upriver by men pulling the tow-ropes. There were no draft animals and no motorized barges. They were unloaded by many children, so as young at 4 years old.
Just hope the innocent people in the path of this torrent are able to evacuate.
The problem really is China plugging the largest water basin in the world with this dam.....China has more large dams than any other country in the world, more than 87,000!....A week or so ago they blew up a large dam with explosives in order to release the build up of water.
I’ve been watching this for the last few weeks, and also when they were building the 3 Gorges Dam around 2012 and all the controversies about it. The chat gets interesting at night when US engineers etc. offer opinions on what’s happening there. Althoug it would be daylight there.
Here’s live feed and it’s overflow is currently operating at max.
