suspensions for unpaid fines and fees items.[0].image.alt By: Anthony ReyesPosted at 6:22 PM, Jul 22, 2020 and last updated 8:42 AM, Jul 23, 2020 NEW YORK (WKBW) — The New York State Senate and Assembly have passed a bill to end the suspension of driver's licenses based on the failure to pay traffic ticket fines or fees. The legislation also creates a payment plan system for drivers.

The bill must be signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to become law.

Sponsored by Senator Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) in the Senate, and by Assemblymember Pamela Hunter (D-Syracuse) in the Assembly, the bill is part of a national push to address policies that unfairly impact low-income and minority communities.

I hear what you are saying though I am not sure its the most important hill to die on.

States, vice the Federal Govt, do have some regulatory authority, and driving licenses are state regulated (now with Federal standards for other national security reasons). Driving is not spelled out in the constitution like speech and RKBA are (though I am with you on the freedom to be mobile within or between states). Some states do put limits on RKBA and thats an explicitly stated right. Not arguing here, just pointing out the defacto other side.

The drivers license is the most common form of ‘official’ ID. Just curious, where are you on ID for voting?

Correction: Vehicle insurance only required if you are a registered republican or have registered as a republican at any time.

see post #9

the only people that are paying the fines are a small speck of the community, namely, regular working people.

Women and minorities hit hardest.

Would love voter ID for voting but in this state ILLEGALS can get drivers licenses. And we have motor voter. You fill in the dots. No voter ID in this state.

This law came on the heels of having illegals attain drivers licenses. I was a LEGAL alien and now a naturalized citizen. Quite incensed over this.
Bet they won’t stop suspending licenses over unpaid “child” support though (which goes to 21 in this state)

I am very much against the use of cameras and surveillance for civil law enforcement. For criminal evidence OK.

Does REAL ID apply in your state? That was supposed to distinguish between the ID of a citizen (trusted air traveler after 911) and the drivers license issued to non-residents/non-citizens.

I am for voter eligibility verification, so I guess that means voter ID.

So if the DL were to go away, it would have to be replaced by something such as a voter ID, which many here also oppose.

I'm just throwing out straw-men here so take no offense. If we didnt have DL's, then if someone was pulled over for speeding as an example, and had no DL as an ID, does that create a dilemma for the officer? Not that the system is perfect from the beginning, but we do build processes around the 'norm' to function. I think something as simple as doing away with DL's creates a handful (at least) of other issues to resolve. Sometimes its easiest to use whats there than to build the better toaster.

Not to sound like Bob Dole, but I wish for simpler times. I dont know about you, but I grew up where I learned to drive (on our private property) cars, station wagons, and tractors before I was 10, standard transmissions and all. But at 15/16 I had to get that learners/drivers permit to be on the road. I'm not too upset about that. Its was and probably still is a right of passage.

You are correct as usual. Why would I think any differently. Two sets of rules.

Take care

Taking the license is supposed to create an incentive to pay the fines and costs. If the offender is working he can get a restricted license to drive to work so that he can pay his fines and costs. Once the fines and costs are paid he gets his full privileges back. That is what the states are throwing out. And it’s gonna put the financial burden of the court system on the law abiding.

Ok, that makes some sense. In that case NY is mucking it up again.

I just meant voter ID in general as you said verification. I would not be for a specific voter id card as that would quickly expand into other id requirements. Government would quickly have us showing this card everywhere.

“Our rights do not come from government and do not require a license.”

According to Black’s Law Dictionary, as a noun, a right is defined as a moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way. Civil rights, as in this case, are such as belong to every citizen of the state or country, or, in a wider sense, to all its inhabitants, and are not connected with the organization or administration of government.

Therefore, according to Blacks, in a connecting of the two statements, A right is a moral or legal entitlement that is outside the parameters of the law. The only thing outside the parameters of laws in the US, to include the Constitution, is the right to be alive in the womb. After that, everything we do and say is covered by law. And even in the womb, once you’ve been made alive, is the possibility of abortion possibly against your will.
If everyone in a perfect world had the same capacity to drive a car, then proof of that capacity would not be required so others on the road would not fear for their lives. But they don’t and even with the evaluations of standards, over the few years from 2017 through 2019, there were 118,000 deaths and over 4 million people to the hospitals for treatment from auto accidents.

Years ago I got my USAC license and qualified to drive F2 cars for fun. Today’s models can accelerate from 0–124 mph in 6.6 seconds. The car has a top speed of right at 199 mph, meaning that it is the fastest single seater racing car behind Formula One and Indy Car Series. Could any people with a disability, or little concern operate one of these. I doubt it.

An example of auto’s on our streets that can easily be an unguided missile is the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon as the fastest production car in the world. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds and completes a quarter-mile time in 9.65 seconds. And you want to open this missile up to anyone that can get in it without proving they have even the least amount of ability to operate one?

And does it make any difference that the least qualified are out there now mixed in with the better qualified? All that does it take the better down to the lesser level when lesser screws up.
