Bioethicist Dr. Zeke Emanuel is predicting that up to 250,000 Americans could die directly from the coronavirus by the end of the year. In an interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett, Emanuel, who is the vice provost for Global Initiatives and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, slammed the Trump administration's response to the pandemic as "incompetent and pretty disastrous."
"Before the year is out, we'll probably have, I would think, between 220,000 and 250,000 Americans who died directly from COVID, not to mention those people who are dying indirectly," Emanuel said in this week's episode of "The Takeout" podcast. Emanuel singled out people with heart conditions or in need of cancer treatment who may not visit the doctor due to concerns about catching the virus as factors contributing to high indirect mortality rates.

“Bioethicist
Stopped reading right there”
Yep, as did I.
The way you guys are counting that may very well be true but, the truth is probably not...
Yes, the head wizard of virus BS, Fauci, said it could be 2.5 million.
Trump has cut it to one tenth of that if it gets to 250k.
Okay. For them, I suppose he is a bioethicist according to the principles they have about human life.
Isn’t this Ezekiel Emanuel, Rahm’s brother?
Is he trying to distance himself by calling himself “Zeke” now?
Always a breath of fresh air..
Not exactly true. The CDC estimates between 24k and 62k deaths from influenza during the '19-'20 flu season. During the six month influenza season of '17-'18 there were 80k deaths after the final numbers were crunched.
Is this the ‘Death Panel’ guy?
I’m pretty sure we’re looking at the same numbers (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html)
2010-2011: 37,000
2011-2012: 12,000
2012-2013: 43,000
2013-2014: 38,000
2014-2015: 51,000
2015-2016: 23,000
2016-2017: 38,000
2017-2018: 61,000
2018-2019: 34,157
Add them all up, divide by 9, average is 37,400.
Also note that 2017-2018 is still preliminary numbers, but their estimate is 61,000; not 80,000.
Is that a number to sneeze at?
80,000 Americans Died From Flu Last YearSept. 27, 2018 -- Influenza was deadlier last season than it has been for at least four decades, killing 80,000 Americans. So said the head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention late Tuesday in an interview with the Associated Press.
Are you triggered by the fact that in 1957 the flu killed 116,000 Americans out of a population of 172 million at the time? Thats about the same as 232,000 today.
I do hope the pun was intentional, because I enjoyed it.
But no, every one of those years’ numbers represents tens of thousands of Americans who have died. That’s why I’m hopeful that a gen 3 vaccine (several are among the candidates for SARS-CoV-2 vaccines) can be demonstrated effective.
A gen 3 vaccine doesn’t need to be “grown” and would not take several months to produce. That would enable us to react much more quickly to the changing landscape of seasonal Influenza and create much more targeted and effective vaccines for it. A “good” year for a flu vaccine might see 40% effectiveness. The various strains of Influenza mutate so quickly and our process for vaccine preparation is currently so slow that we just can’t keep up with it. The new vaccine type has the potential to save many thousands of American lives.
Triggered by it? No. I’m perfectly well aware there have been some diseases that have been worse than what we’re facing today. It’s one of many reasons I’ve been against lockdowns and shutdowns since the start. I would probably feel very differently if this were a more existential threat, like a weaponized smallpox on its way to killing half the country. SARS-CoV-2 is no smallpox.
I’m not triggered by factual information. I don’t start calling people names, cursing at them, accusing them of being trolls, or any of the other childish behavior I’ve seen when some other people are exposed to simple observable facts that don’t fit their personal narrative of reality. I actually appreciate correct information put in front of me, especially if it’s new and even moreso if it corrects something I’ve been wrong about.
Sorry, I didn’t realize it was a pun until I was taking my finger off of the post button. lol
“Health expert” on what? Bioethicist?
How many coronavirus patients has this deranged purveyor of death ever treated?
I hope that your hopes for that vaccine materialize.
Personally I won’t be taking any vaccine but I don’t get sick from viruses. If others want it that’s fine with me.
I think he gets off on death.
They love death (as long as it’s not their own).
They want most of us dead, the rest in chains.
Can you cite one other example of a safe and effective vaccine for ANY strain of coronavirus?
