PORTLAND (WGME) One researcher is warning more sharks are visiting Maine waters, and Mainers need to be on the lookout.
Woman killed in apparent shark attack near Bailey Island
Dr. James Sulikowski has studied sharks in Maine and beyond for more than two decades.
He says he was shocked to hear of the state's first fatal shark attack.
He says the only other documented attack in Maine happened back in 2010, when a shark circled an underwater diver, but he says sharks are here, moving north from Cape Cod in search of food.
Maine swimmers warned to use caution after woman killed in apparent shark attack
As the seal population increases, as the competition down near the Cape gets stiffer for food sources, you're going to have more of these sharks move up, as that sort of happens, Maine's got to be prepared, Sulikowski said.
Sulikowski says Mainers have grown accustomed to not having to worry about sharks, and that needs to change.
But I thought sharks ate seals, especially young ones.
For people not familiar with this area, Bailey Island is in Casco Bay just north of Portland, ME.
This is 2 hours NORTH of Boston. This is way out of the Gulf Stream.
As the Great White shark population grows on the Atlantic east coast stories like this will become more common.
As articles and news sources state this is the FIRST fatal shark attack in the history of the state of Maine.
As Capt Tom will attest, the growth in population of Atlantic Grey seals has brought the White Sharks first up to Cape Cod and now the gulf of ME.
If these people would social distance and wear masks more often, maybe this wouldnt happen!
I like that the sharks are skipping right by New Hampshire on their way to Maine from Mass.
Interesting, I just did a search for shark and nothing came up
Janet Mills can solve this problem easy enough.
Are these sharks quarantining for 14 days?
My son lives at Jenness/Cable beach. I plan to be there this weekend.
So maybe getting more lobsters out of the water and giving them to me will help keep the Sharks away. That said if it is a mako shark reel him in and club him and I will definitely eat that shark!
Is the seal population growing because the water is colder? Is the cold water boosting krill population? Has over-fishing been reduced and are fish populations returning to levels of plenty?
The Left uses politics whenever possible in news stories. But this shark death seems to be covered as 100% tragedy (which it is) and without a political agenda. Which makes me think that the Left has no Climate Change to stand on here at all.
At the Jersey shore my husband killed a 4 foot shark. He cut it into slices down the backbone. We pan fried them and had a stack in the refrigerator. My sons, then 5 and 8 would go in and grab a piece whenever they were hungry. My older son is now in Afghanistan with Special Forces. I don’t know if there is a connection.
Now Maine DOESN’T want tourists? /sarc

When we were in Maine last summer, there were plenty of em, but the ones we saw were all on land with 2 legs. Vicious creatures too. /s

God bless him!
What a beautiful place to call home. One of the most scenic drives in the country is up 1A.
I’m stuck in Mass. right now but my dream is to eventually buy a home on Seabrook Beach or at least in the neighborhood. I don’t care if I’m in a tent. The ocean is priceless.
Have a great weekend.
The Atlantic Grey seal population has been increasing ever since they were protected by the Federal government in the late 60’s.
There are a couple islands in the Isle of Shoals. This archipelago lies 6 miles off of Portsmouth, NH. The islands are half in ME, half in NH. Duck Island is a protected sanctuary for seals.
This is similar to Monomoy Island just south of Chatham, MA on Cape Cod. This is another federally protected island full of seals.
Casco Bay off of Portland, ME also has had a big increase in the seal population over the last 30 years.
So, the more seals, the more food, the more big sharks.
Little sharks do not attack a 250-300 lb seal. Little sharks eat fish. Big sharks(over 8’) eat seals.

Or she could bath in seal blood and go for a swim.
...I don’t really mean that...sort of.
What branch?
Restoring the seal population has consequences.
The headline is a trompe-l’il for me. I mentally inserted an X in the middle of Maine and suddenly I had more sharks visiting Maxine Waters. Imagine my disappointment.
