“I recall seeing GWB riding one of the first Segways”
I believe he gave one to the Japanese PM as well on a visit to the USA.
A friend, who was one of the Two (2) cofounders of Apple, was introduced to a stunningly beautiful friend of mine.
I made the introduction.
He always carried 4 in his Prius.
He gave one the kids of my friend and use to love riding at full speed off the portico entrance to my friend’s mansions and flying off the top landing to the ground 10 feet away.
One day, my friend left me alone in the house(17,500 sq ft).
I took the Segway down to the wine vineyard on the property and across the back side of the property.
Coming around a couple trees found myself face to face with a rather large and horned buck.
He was gigantic!
The Segway makes almost no sound but imagine running up a hill and finding a large buck staring at you and we both stopped dead in our tracks.
I leaned backward to escape and the buck pounded two steps and slowly backed away as well.
I could have been gored or killed and would be Woz’s fault
Still funny when I think about it but, sad my friend didn’t marry Woz, because she promised me a red Porsche Carrera if she had....
Oh well...
I was watching an old movie with Tony Curtis the other night “The Great Imposter” (which I decided to watch after hearing Henry Mancini’s excellent rendition of his theme for the movie) and one of the actors a prison inmate looked familiar...I was puzzling over who it was, and my wife blurted out “That’s the Joker!”
I enjoyed the movie...
The source of energy matters, unless you’re one that just doesn’t care and just wants to shut your eyes in denial.
EVs don’t really offer anything that ICE cars don’t offer, other than the idea of zero to 80 in 2-4 seconds, which is really a stupid option that is not needed at all for city or even highway driving.
Bang for the buck? In what universe? I’m one of those that would buy one if they offered anything of real value over ICE cars, but, I and 98% of the buying public just haven’t seen it. Perhaps in another hundred years, but I doubt it.
The only vehicle that would offer superior options might be a nuclear powered engine, but, it’s not on the horizon.
When it comes to promises, well, there have been many, not only from Tesla, but from most other vehicle manufacturers too, but, promises are not the same as reality. Tesla has been around for about 15 years, and it’s still a niche car. When will Tesla come out with a series of vehicles which can compete in the real world, for small/medium/large cars, and small/medium/large SUVs, and for small/medium/large pickups? Not any time soon, and perhaps never. They produce for the ‘oh, wow!’ market, and are not in the real world. Like I said, perhaps in another 100 years, but doubtful.
‘Luddites’ are oftentimes more about reality than about promises. In another 10 years, you’ll still be looking for the Tesla or other maker EV that can compete for real in the personal transportation markets. I remember saying the same thing to others more than 10 years ago, and I’ve turned out to be right. Try to remember 10 years from now what I just predicted.
Seems like a common outcome - once Ninebot looked like they would lose the IP lawsuit, just buy the company involved and both sides can claim victory.
In 2015, many Chinese firms were flush with cash.
Maybe a thread on ... “Stories from Grandpa” ?
IT is not over. They just outsourced it to India.
Segway boss died in ‘act of courtesy’
Jimi Heselden, 62, reversed the machine to make way for another dog walker. NOT Dean Kamen.

Optics is everything in marketing.
I’m still surprised this thing hung on. It’s got a lot of cool geewhiz but it’s just too much tech with too high a price tag for the problem it’s solving. I remember it hit right after Razor scooters became very popular. Hundred dollars for a Razor vs five grand for a Segway, seemed pretty obvious. Also remember how it was originally called Segway Human Transport, who names their product SHT?!
That’s one way to structure an out of court cash and stock settlement.
Intel had a internal project back in 93.
It was said that it was killed off by the CPU team because the die was too big.
Truth was it was killed off by the Pentium team as they wanted the funding.
Took a tour of Columbus, OH on one a few yrs. ago.
Fuuun! Just couldn’t think of a reason I had to get one. Police in RDU concourses use them. Fast ones too.
Likely other airports also.
It’s a true story too.
LOL
Makes me laugh when I think of the look in that buck’s eyes and what mine probably looked like as we both slowly backed away from each other...
Her backyard was the only place on the property I hated because the friggin dear where constantly there grazing on her plants.
heh, when the Segway was being hyped at launch on Drudge they simply called the product “it”, as if “it” were the thing to change human society forever. Big capital letters on Drudge all the time hyping the release of “IT”.
It made some memorable headlines in the intervening years, including the death of British entrepreneur Jimi Heselden, whose own Segway veered off a cliff months after purchasing the company from Kamen.
