Segway Inc is ending production of its two-wheeled personal transporter vehicle that gained popularity among tourists and some police forces, but found itself embroiled in mishaps with famous personalities.

Launched nearly two decades ago, the company will stop manufacturing the Segway PT starting July 15 as it shifts focus to other units such as its shared scooter business, it said on Tuesday. The model accounted for less than 1.5% of the Bedford, New Hampshire-based company’s revenue last year.

In April 2015, Chinese transportation robotics firm Ninebot acquired the company, about half a year after Segway named Ninebot in a patent infringement complaint.

The brainchild of inventor Dean Kamen, the original Segway model carries one user standing on a small platform between two side-by-side wheels.

The owner of the company died in 2011 after driving over a cliff in a Segway in CT. Looks like a Chinese company acquired the company, and used its patents to supply Lime and other bike companies in the US.

RIP.

I remember in the late early 2000s I worked at TI, and codename Ginger was a big deal. Turned out to be one of the biggest flops ever.

I was in the DLP group in the late 2000’s.

Not having the clearance needed, the engineers would cover their desks when I would come through.

What was Ginger?

The founder was saying that cities would be redesigned based on his new technology during the prerelease hype. Then when it was released, it was clear the balance system was cool, but a powered, self-balancing scooter wasn't going to shake up civilization.

Dean Kamen is still alive and kicking.

It's only the preposterous Segway that is dead.

I think it was just too bulky for sidewalks. And I don’t think it has a cigarette lighter.

I worked one summer at HP on something called the Kangaroo.

I believe it was a PDA that flopped because like all other PDAs it had no touchscreen.

Ginger was the codename for the Segway. I worked at Spring Creek in the early 2000’s right after defense went to Raytheon. I had to go over there for IT purposes an I’d asks them what’s up ‘if we told you we’d have to kill you’. Good times.

Heck, TI back then had one of the first touchpad PDAs. Don’t remember the model or anything, but it was incredibly rare. I bought an HP model and was lambasted for not giving the company loyalty, semi-jokingly.

Segway: too fast for the sidewalk and too slow for the road.

Everyone else I knew in high school had an HP calculator, but I loved my TI.

Reverse Polish Notation? Not for me!
