They couldn’t get around the fact that you just looked like a giant dork driving one. Back when the Segways were relatively new and cool (maybe), I had occasion to land at the Augusta, GA airport. The line guys from the FBO were all riding around on them. It was one of the rare occasions where the Segway wasn't Dork Factor 9.
