Cities in Bind as Turmoil Spreads Far Beyond Portland (NYT alert)
New York Times ^ | July 27, 2020 | Mike Baker, Thomas Fuller and Shane Goldmacher

SEATTLE — A series of strident new protests over police misconduct rattled cities across the country over the weekend, creating a new dilemma for state and local leaders who had succeeded in easing some of the turbulence in their streets until a showdown over the use of federal agents in Oregon stirred fresh outrage.

With some demonstrators embracing destructive protest methods and police often using aggressive tactics to subdue both them and others who are demonstrating peacefully, the scenes on Saturday night in places like Seattle, Oakland, Calif., and Los Angeles recalled the volatile early days of the protests after the death of George Floyd at the end of May.

The latest catalyst was the deployment of federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Ore., whose militarized efforts to subdue protests around the federal courthouse have sparked mass demonstrations and nightly clashes there. They have also inspired new protests of solidarity in other cities, where people have expressed deep concern about the federal government exercising such extensive authority in a city that has made it clear it opposes the presence of federal agents.

President Trump has seized on the scenes of national unrest — statues toppled and windows smashed — to build a law-and-order message for his re-election campaign, spending more than $26 million on television ads depicting a lawless dystopia of empty police stations and 911 answering services that he argues might be left in a nation headed by his Democratic rival, Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Mr. Biden insisted last week that the president’s pledge to inject a federal law-and-order presence into the already volatile issue of policing shows that he is “determined to sow chaos and division. To make matters worse instead of better.”

The situation has left city leaders, now watching the backlash unfold on their streets, outraged

It's Trump's fault for sending federal agents to prevent federal courthouses from being burned down /s. The encouragement of rioters by mayors and media such as the NYT is the problem.

Strange how this seems to only affect Democrat run cities.

“The latest catalyst was the deployment of federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Ore., “

Horse hockey.

They were deployed due to the riots, arson, vandalism, assault and battery that NY Times would not report.

NYT lies in every article they publish.

Are there any GOP run cities? Major ones, I mean.

I live in Jacksonville, FL, and we have a RINO who hasn’t been particularly good on anything and let the RNC get kicked out because he was afraid of “protesters” after the sheriff said they couldn’t protect the attendees. And we did have some rioting here over the Confederate monuments, where they made their statement by smashing windows in the beautiful main public library building and trying to set fire to it. Always a classic storm trooper technique. Burn the books.

We haven’t had anything major since that, but that’s because the mayor has given in to all of their demands (mostly, no RNC).

"The latest catalyst was the deployment of federal law enforcement agents"

It's always the same story with liberals: appease instead of oppose evil. Win the hearts of criminals and terrorists by understanding their pain, and they'll stop what they're doing. But every time we reach out to hug them, some conservative says or does something insensitive and spoils everything, and the criminals and terrorists just get worse.

Biden rallies... Nobody who’s rioting is voting for Trump.

The bad news for the media, Biden and the DumorRATS... Unlike the Trump hating media who revel with glee during these disturbances... The majority of America is disgusted by rioting and mayhem.

“What cities are Republican-Run these days?”

Lol. Plenty. Most cities are Republican-Run. That’s why you don’t see them in the headlines. Not so much rioting and stuff.

They sit around thinking up descriptive phrases to try and add as much drama as possible and paint a picture.

There are no cities involved. The riots are occuring in feral and vermin infested jungle enclaves

“The encouragement of rioters by mayors and media...”

AND city councils and District Attorneys.

AND one thousand and one anarchy-communist splinter groups including marxist BLM.

I can just imagine another NYT modern Walter Duranty media guy printing one up for Al Capone to claim that it was the police turning up the heat on Capone’s operation that was real reason for an increase in prostitution, illegal gambling, bank heists, mob assassinations, and business shakedowns.

Ok, they stupidly believed the NYT back then, but who in their right minds today would believe an increased police presence is responsible for altar boys all of a sudden becoming arsonists, looters, and AK-47-toting domestic terrorists?
