Jet which came too close to Iranian aircraft was American

Several passengers on an Iranian airline were injured on Thursday over Syria after the pilot changed altitude to avoid collision with a US fighter jet, Reuters reported, citing Iranian media.

The US military, however, said its F-15 was at a safe distance from the Iranian plane.

The Iranian plane, belonging to Mahan Air, was heading from Tehran to Beirut when the pilot staged a safety maneuver, in an incident that Iran’s Foreign Ministry said would be investigated.

The incident was initially blamed on Israel, with Iranian television claiming that an Israeli fighter jet had flew "threateningly close" to an Iranian passenger plane over the skies of Damascus.

Iran’s official IRIB news agency quoted a passenger from the Iranian plane describing how his head had hit the roof of the plane during the change in altitude, and video showed an elderly passenger sprawled on the floor.

All the passengers left the plane, some with minor injuries, the head of the Beirut airport told Reuters.

The plane arrived back in Tehran in the early hours of Friday, the Fars news agency reported.

The US military’s Central Command, which oversees American troops in the region, said the F-15 aircraft was conducting a visual inspection of the Iranian aircraft when it passed near the Tanf garrison in Syria where US forces are present.

Captain Bill Urban, the senior Central Command spokesman, said the F-15 “conducted a standard visual inspection of a Mahan Air passenger airliner at a safe distance of about 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) from the airliner this evening.”

Coward pilot took emergency evasive action when none was needed.

Just the “sprawled on floor” part... the rest was probably legit.

“Coward pilot took emergency evasive action when none was needed.”

The reason the Iranian defense forces shot down a passenger plane in Tehran’s airspace is because they know they poked the bear. They await the bear’s reaction in fear. But the bear has not reacted, at least not visibly. So, everyone down to the janitors and stewardesses are reacting to every event like it’s the giant bear coming for them.

This reaction on the part of the people associated with Iran is because Trump is president. If Obama was still president all would be sleeping peacefully.

Probably idiot Iranian pilot overreacted and made an unnecessary evasive maneuver with a passenger airliner. Idiot Iranian passengers weren’t wearing their seatbelts as they should have been. They’re lucky they weren’t shot out of the sky by their own missiles upon departing Tehran.

Who ordered/advised the pilot to take evasive action? Normally, it would be TCAS, (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) which would only work if the F-15 were responding to interrogations, which it would only do if its intentions were “friendly”.

In U.S. airspace, by law, TCAS has precedence over ATC. (At least one disaster was caused when a German air traffic controller overruled TCAS, with fatal results.)

If the pilot was acting on his own initiative, it’s pilot error, if he was responding to TCAS, then the F-15 may have been too close. When the incompetent and dishonest Iranians are involved there’s no way of knowing. z

I work as a Contractor at MIT/Lincoln Lab, and know the guy who analyzes every single airspace violation in the U.S. as part of a contract with the FAA. (There aren’t that many.) He’s a retired Navy pilot and retired Aeronautics professor. I think they have the right guy, but I don’t know who’s going to take his place. Unfortunately, under current remote work conditions I won’t have the opportunity to casually ask him about this incident.

I think that incident was turned into a movie, with Schwarzenegger playing the widower of a passenger. He killed the air traffic controller.

The pilot reacted as he was previously ordered to get photos and news of the otherwise un reportable event. The event is pure propaganda

I think if the USS Vincennes hadn't blown an Iranian airliner out of the sky for doing nothing more than taking off from an airport on a standard departure route, one could fault the Iranians for being concerned about discovering that they were in close proximity to the American military.

As it is, I can't.

The incident was initially blamed on Israel...
...the pilot probably panicked when he initially identified the distant jet as a Mossad-trained bird.

No; the captain of the Vincennes put the ship under the departure route of the airport, apparently not realizing that there was an airport nearby, He misread the plane's track and consequently overreacted.

But from the point of view of the plane crew, they had no idea that their departure raised any consternation anywhere. (The investigation confirmed that the plane never descended as it headed in the direction of the US ship.)

That the captain of the Vincennes decided to operate his ship under the departure route of the airport was certainly not the fault of the Iranians in the plane. That he did so without being aware of the airport itself is hardly the fault of anyone but him.
