He was not pleading. He’s playing it well. He obviously has information that tells him at least the masks do something. If nothing else it’s going to gain him votes and that’s Priority One at this point.
He’s hoping the Left starts to be against masks if he is for them?

IOW - obey the guidelines put forth by your governor and local officials. This is exactly what Mike Pence has been saying. Either they are lying - or they are fools - or they are doing what they think is best.
IF they are lying or are fools - they do not deserve to lead.
There are some reasons not to, for some people. But the "better than nothing" principle applies generally here. Hard to quantify and it depends on the circumstances.
Trump appears to be following rather than leading but whatever. My gut says that if he felt 100% confident he was “winning” he wouldn’t have even brought it up.

If you want to have some real fun, suggest to the mask-wearing Karen on line with you at the grocery store that Trump wants to kill people, especially the people who don’t support him, who are the most likely willing early mask adopters. Then mention some medical studies that indicate the harm of masks.
Get yourself the kind of T-shirt Leftists would wear to make Karen more likely to think you are anti-Trump.

Tell that to the individuals who have been arrested, put under house arrest, or have had their small business forcibly shut down for violating a mask order.
Not worth debating over masks. I think it helps a little bit. But not as much as the experts are saying. Maybe 10%. Better than nothing
