Have been saying this since March. The people pooh-poohing this approach need to understand that if natural herd immunity doesn’t work, neither will a vaccine.
We are approaching a death rate near that of the common influenza.
Our vaccines for influenza are basically worthless (must be vaccinated each year, the vaccine may be the wrong one, the vaccine may give the the influenza).
The world survives the influenza, it will survive Covid-19, the common cold, etc.
We are not immune to those, and have no herd immunity either.
Stop with the panic.
“Herd” immunity means, we failed.
Frankly.
Prior to the 20th century, herd immunity was the only thing that ultimately prevented the spread of common viruses like those of the coronavirus family. Covid19 seems to be a somewhat more virulent strain than others in recent history, but compared to human history, its nothing special at all.
Herd immunity is the only hope anyway. Immigrants and a large non vaccine group will require that herd immunity will be our only true way of limiting this virus. There is no stopping it. German Measles has not been stopped, even in the US. So expect this to be around regardless of a vaccine.
The Swedish example suggests that lock downs and extreme isolation is much less effective than agressively concentrating resources on the most vulnerable. This virus is a very bad pathogen but as in all other historic pandemics, herd immunity will one way or another eventually develop.
And that’s why you don’t quarantine WELL people. Have been saying that right along.

There is NO SUCH THING as “herd immunity” - only a lack of exposure.
Herd immunity is the only hope, anyway. Boris Johnson was correct at the beginning - and predictably caught hell for it from the MSM.

If they do come up with a vaccine it won’t stop it many won’t use it and they will do as they please it’s why it’s spreading so fast now.
DoD and HHS have already awarded contracts for fillable injectors and needles. These will be filled with the approved vaccine(s). No vials. No syringes. It's part of “Project Jumpstart" and is invoking the Defense Production Act. If a vaccine is available, they expect to fill 100 million this year and 500 million in 2021.
If they can't come up with a long lasting vaccine, it's not clear that heard immunity will happen. The Wuhan Virus may become endemic, like seasonal flus and colds.
