Thomas Burriel was 13 when he first learned about democratic socialism. It happened on Instagram.
Burriel was scrolling through his feed one day in February after school. At the timewinter 2018he was still attending Linus Pauling, the middle school in his hometown of Corvallis, which is about two hours outside of Portland, Oregon. Linus Pauling offers a Human Rights Club and an Equal Rights/Safer Space Club to discuss social justice and world events, but Burriel wasnt involved in them, or in any political clubs at school. And while he identified as a Democrat, he admitted that he had also sympathized with some Republican talking points out of ignorance.
But then Instagrams algorithm suggested Burriel follow @chs_socialists, the page for Corvallis High Schools Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter.

Burriel is part of a growing group of young people who say they hate capitalism. Theyve come of age amid the ruins of Obama-era liberalism, and their political icons are members of Congress like Sanders or New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Theyve joined walkouts for gun violence and climate change, and are leading groups like the Sunrise Movement to call out corporations and complacent politicians. And now, as lawmakers scramble to respond to a pandemic that has sent the United States economy into free fall, they see obvious solutions to the crisis were in, like single-payer health care, universal basic income, and bailouts for everyday Americans, to name a few.
A 2018 Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans ages 18-29no matter their party affiliationhad a positive view of socialism. Americans in that age group were also far less likely than other age groups to view capitalism favorably.

Google “Yuri Besmenov” videos and it all makes sense. that succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.
That's what makes them CHILDREN.
If you've reached the age of 18-29 and you are still a socialist, then you simply haven't grown up yet. I'll gladly treat you like a child, too.
Don't worry, our high-tech overlords will still allow us a semblance of "religion" to hold on to
Is this a true story or is it a apocryphal tale? I have never heard of this story though I hope it is real.
In today's world the majority of "Parents" are quite willing to give their young over to the government as soon as possible.. From what I hear, nowadays the government takes them off their hands at four years old... :(
the peasants ALWAYS turn to socialism as their panacea when they are ignorant of history, economics, psychology (human nature), and politics; they ALWAYS fall for the promise of free stuff, because they have no idea where stuff comes from ... they have no idea that socialism always fails because socialism can not lift poor people higher, it can only make everyone poor ...
Traditionally-’Socialism’ is the choice of all the disaffected, alienated, violent, criminal and loser elements where ever and when ever it has been tried and forced onto a population.
Don’t believe me? While they last, you can check the history books.
Bottom line, “If it’s SUCH a great policy/system, why does have to be forced onto people?”
OREGON PING...kid profiled is from Corvallis
Please send me your name by FReepmail if you want to be on this list.
Yeah, and the boomers were such a treat.
Every generation has its “problems.”
We manage to get by. This is not nearly as bad as ‘69-70.
Make no mistake. The real battle today is not in the streets, it is in the classroom.
Dont agree. My Daughters school (sports only because she homeschools) has almost ALL kids protestEd and bowed to Black Lives Matter. A couple brave kids stood against this madness, but were persecuted online. And this happened in Conservative Iowa!?! We are headed for a tsunami of little goosestepping socialist SJWs who have grown up on nothing but Marxism, Social Justice Theory, and Shooting video games. Not a good combination
Not even close to true. I have a brother and sister both near 60 that full on believe. Sister going farther left in the last few years but brother is full on believer that it just has not been tried right yet.
I am PRE baby boom, a member of the “silent generation” and many of my age thought socialism was a good idea when they were twenty or so. A person has to have a mature thought process to understand that socialism is tribalism and to the extent that it works at all it only works in very small groups. To think that it can work out well for a large nation is akin to believing in Santa Claus.
That guy H.L. Mencken understood some reality didn’t he?
I am no longer able to maintain my eight acres due to lung problems so we have found an unmarried HETERO couple in their mid-twenties who come every two weeks bringing two zero turn mowers and mow the five acres of grass in two hours or less. They are truly amazing, they have been together for five or six years as a couple and have known each other for ten or twelve years. Other than the lack of a wedding they are like an old time country boy and girl and they work like people used to work and at such a reasonable rate that I feel guilty but they won’t accept more. If I could only meet some more like these two!!!!
“Sister going farther left in the last few years but brother is full on believer that it just has not been tried right yet.”
Actually it has NOT been tried right yet. To try it right they would need to live by the slogan, everyone would have to give according to his ability and that means making every effort to increase his ability and everyone would have to take according to his needs and that means MINIMIZING his needs, not imagining all kinds of new needs. If people would do that socialism would work very well but that only happens at the nuclear family level and not even very often at that level, to expect it to work for a nation is like imagining that hailstones are precious jewels. Why can’t people get it through their thick skulls that there are always plenty of people willing to take something free but very few who are willing to work hard to produce something to give to a stranger.
Do they honestly believe in socialism/communism?
Do they go out to Turnip Commune #34 to pull turnips?
Lots of people say they are for it for a variety of reasons. Some of them want to appear dangerous. Some want to advance the Democrat Party. Others are just woofing.
They are just talkers.
Ask them when they are going to North Korea to advance the revolution.
“From each according to their abilities, too each according to their needs”.
-The thing these snowflakes don’t get about this is that they have absolutely no constitutional individual rights, and they have absolutely no say as to what their abilities or needs are.
