Thomas Burriel was 13 when he first learned about democratic socialism. It happened on Instagram.
Burriel was scrolling through his feed one day in February after school. At the timewinter 2018he was still attending Linus Pauling, the middle school in his hometown of Corvallis, which is about two hours outside of Portland, Oregon. Linus Pauling offers a Human Rights Club and an Equal Rights/Safer Space Club to discuss social justice and world events, but Burriel wasnt involved in them, or in any political clubs at school. And while he identified as a Democrat, he admitted that he had also sympathized with some Republican talking points out of ignorance.
But then Instagrams algorithm suggested Burriel follow @chs_socialists, the page for Corvallis High Schools Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter.
...
Burriel is part of a growing group of young people who say they hate capitalism. Theyve come of age amid the ruins of Obama-era liberalism, and their political icons are members of Congress like Sanders or New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Theyve joined walkouts for gun violence and climate change, and are leading groups like the Sunrise Movement to call out corporations and complacent politicians. And now, as lawmakers scramble to respond to a pandemic that has sent the United States economy into free fall, they see obvious solutions to the crisis were in, like single-payer health care, universal basic income, and bailouts for everyday Americans, to name a few.
A 2018 Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans ages 18-29no matter their party affiliationhad a positive view of socialism. Americans in that age group were also far less likely than other age groups to view capitalism favorably.

Millennials are a huge part of what is wrong with this country, but the generation after us is not turning out any better I’m afraid.
I’ll tell you why besides the fact that these young people are self-deluded, indoctrinated, etc., it’s because they did NOT grow up during the Cold War like many of us did and see via TV, etc. the utter cancer socialism is.
Average Gen Z kid: “Well, as I understand it, socialism means all my debts are paid, I get everything for free, and I can work as an artist in a big downtown loft just hanging out with my friends. Yeah. Socialism is cool.”
VICE is a pure propaganda outlet that only tells lies and pushes propaganda. Literally no reason to believe anything they write. I know because I have them on facebook, and 99% of what they write about is about trannies, butt plastic surgery, and the latest BLM bullshit without limits. They were promoting reparations a few days ago.
The 1% is the occasional (OLD) documentary about naked warlords in Africa, Narco Terrorism in Mexico, etc. They don’t do actually informative documentaries anymore. Just reruns.
they want free stuff. Lots of free stuff, and they want to stay home and work on their “craft”
This nation turned its back on God (a long time ago) and now government has become the religion. Government doesn’t like religion, IT wants to take the place of God.
Cargo cult.
Stuff miraculously appears on the island, and the tribal elders have to decide how to distribute it.
(Of course, when the tribal elders get senile things start to get _really_ interesting....)
Exactly. We watched the evils of socialism happen in real time during the Cold War.
It’s the industrial-strength stupid illustrated in articles like this that makes me grieve for our future.
Human Rights Club? Equal Rights/Safer Space Club? In a middle school? WTF?! The schools exposing and proposing socialism to kids?
It’s obvious that if anything should be defunded because it poses a clear and convincing danger to society it is the schools.
“If it saves even one child...”
I still remember those garbage articles that said “Why GenZ may be the most conservative generation since the Founding Fathers” and all we got is the most socialist generation since the founding fathers.
Nailed it. Some other ones add, “I can wear the boot that stamps on a human face forever!”
It’s what they are taught in school along with hatred for evil America. Our education system needs a huge reboot
In all honesty it is not fair to blame the younger generation. Blame their parents for not teaching them correctly. Their parents had a responsibility to teach. They didn’t meet that responsibility. I have two daughters in their 20’s. They are normal, well adjusted, hardworking, and social. Their friends are conservatives. The awards are plenty when you know you taught your children well. Socialist parents know this too - that is the problem.
Naive Stupidity
“Millennials are a huge part of what is wrong with this country, but the generation after us is not turning out any better Im afraid.”
Then they will learn a lesson. The phrase, “be careful what you wish for because you may get it” comes to mind.
We will get exactly the government we deserve.
Interesting how people polarize. Crony-capitalism thrives under many different forms of government. Communism, fascism, dictatorship, monarchy, even representative republic.
That’s one of the reasons why I posted this. For the longest time, some right-wing people seemed to want to believe two things: 1. Millennials would grow out of their leftism. 2. Generation Z would be a reactionary right-wing generation. Not true. Millennials are keeping their bad politics and Gen Zers, while not liking the “woe is me” attitude of millennials, are also left wing.
Too many kids grow up without ever having to work at anything. People with too much time on their hands turn to destructive thinking and behavior. Humans are meant to live with some kind of purpose. Then there is this, too:
The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.” H.L. Mencken
