Recently, I ran across a piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer that lays out four racist words and phrases that should be banished from the English language. It begins like this:
"Editor's note: Please be aware offensive terms are repeated here solely for the purpose of identifying and analyzing them honestly. These terms may upset some readers."
Steel yourself, brave reader, here they are:
Peanut gallery
Eenie meenie miney moe
Gyp
No can do
The same grammarian who authored the piece had previously confronted the "deeply racist connotation" of the word "thug," noting that President Donald Trump "wasn't the least bit bashful" when calling Minneapolis rioters "thugs" in a tweet, despite the word's obvious bigoted history. In 2015, President Barack Obama referred to Baltimore rioters as "thugs" as well. He likely did so because "thug" defined as a "violent person, especially a criminal" is a good way to describe rioters. It's true that not everyone in a riot engages in wanton violent criminality. Some participants are merely "looters" defined as "people who steal goods during a riot." That word is also allegedly imbued with racist connotations, according to the executive editor of The Los Angeles Times and others.

That’ll fix the problems in the inner city. So we’re done then? /s
Well! “Steel yourself” and “brave reader” should also be included!
...er...I mean...excluded!
They are not niggardly in their list of words and phrases they want to ban.
...maybe “included” and “excluded” should also be excluded...I mean, included...I mean...
I have never once modified my speech to adhere to any of these demands over the past 30 years. Anyone else?
For those in the peanut gallery, when it comes to ditching these four: no can do.
The language police are gyping us. Dare I say it ... their choice of words that offend now seems kinda random, as if they played some childish game to Pick out words and phrases at random.
No more guarded speech!
Just tell the offended to grow up.
"To take advantage of their victims, the thugs would join travellers and gain their confidence; this would allow them to surprise and strangle the travellers with a handkerchief or noose. They would then rob and bury their victims."
The term has evolved to apply broadly to criminals in general.
If thug and looter are banned probably need to add arsonist as well.
And of course any mention of self defense by a white person is racist.
In the old movies I watch, all the thugs are white.
Say, you’re not wearing a “cotton” shirt are you? See how I snuck that in.
Nope...me either.
Eenie meenie miney moe....catch a democrat by the toe.
...calling Minneapolis rioters “thugs” in a tweet, despite the word’s obvious bigoted history...
Huh? A thug has always been a tough ner do well, or violent criminal. In comics and movies back in the day they were white. Never was a racial thing until recently when blacks decided it was cool to live the thug life. Ernie meanie money mow, catch a tiger by the toe. Thats the way I was taught...in the South in the 60s. Perhaps the author heard it another way. I dont hang with blacks, but wish them no harm. Keep this daily nonsense up and I may have to reconsider my position.
Looters - Undocumented shoppers
Good lord - “no can do” is now racist. Google-fu (oops!) reveals via pious woke sites that it allegedly mocks Chinese immigrants’ broken English.
Along with another saying I’ve used all my life - “long time, no see”. Apparently that’s “racist” too. Go figure.
These people are completely insane!!
Ernie meanie money mow,
Jeez phone, stop helping!
I’ve known that ‘gyp’ was offensive to some people for many years. Had a friend who was Roma in college, stopped using it then just out of basic politeness to a bandmate rather than being PC.
There’s a whole heap if COMPLETE IDIOTS with keyboards and a social media platform who need to be completely ignored by the few remaining sane people in this country (and on Planet Earth?).
