The faculty of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, voted on Monday to remove the name of Robert E. Lee from the universitys name. During a faculty meeting on Monday, 79 percent of faculty voted in favor of a change to the universitys name.
According to a report by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the faculty at Washington & Lee University voted on Monday to remove Lee from the universitys name.
Zoila Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor at the university, argued that the name change would be a small step towards making students from diverse backgrounds more comfortable on campus.
A name change is a symbolic gesture, but what we really need to invest our energy in is changing our behavior as faculty and students, Ponce de Leon. The members of our community who come from diverse backgrounds dont feel comfortable because of how we treat people it isnt just the name.
Jim Casey, an economics professor at the university, argued that many of his peers voted in favor of the name change to avoid being on the wrong side of history.
We feel like were going to end up on the wrong side of this as an institution and that it will harm us, Casey said. Everyone who was in that conversation feels that the best thing for our institution is to drop our affiliation with Lee.
Brandon Hasbrouck, an associate professor of law at the university, argued that his peers have not taken their fight for social justice far enough. Hasbrouck argued that the university should remove George Washingtons name as well.
It is worth exploring why the faculty has decided to make a collective statement on Lee and why the faculty has not included a demand to drop Washington in their petition

Next week, they’ll vote to remove “Washington.”
The new name will be “and.”
The professors don’t own the school nor pay the bills.
There are too many Washington colleges and universities and he was a slave-owner as well. A large plantation slave-owner let us not forget.
So, if you are going to remove Lee, you need to remove Washington as well. Rename it say “Woke College.” Double dare you.
All colleges should be renamed using a modified Dewey decimal system.
A liberal arts college could be 1000, the first one would be 1000.1. And so on.
I’m sure that will offend someone, so at some point, we’ll just have to shut them all down, and that would be the beginning of healing this country.
I demand this byatch be renamed. Ponce de Leon was on Columbus 2nd voyage, claimed Florida and Puerto Rico for Spain, and was PRs first governor!
Talk about delusions of grandeur (or maybe delusions of adequacy)! History will take no note of these ciphers.
In more ways than you can count.
But, could we just say that wokeness starts at home; you know, the Biblical imprecation "first remove the log from your own eye."
Ol' Poncie here should go first.
Then change the reference to Harry Lighthorse Lee, they won’t know the connection, they’re too ignorant of history, even the history professors.
After they realize the other guy owned slaves, too, they’ll change the school’s name to “& University”...
What are they going to do with General Lee’s remains? Rebrand them unknown?
Brandon Hasbrouck, an associate professor of law at the university, argued that his peers have not taken their fight for social justice far enough. Hasbrouck argued that the university should remove George Washingtons name as well.

Who didn’t see that demand coming next.
Chapter 11 University
So are they going to tear down the Chapel and the Museum? How about digging up Traveller?
These people are despicable.
Shameful. Lee did much to re-invigorate the college during his tenure as president of the university after the war. Regardless of his Civil War deeds, his postwar work for the school helped save it from failure.
After all, "7" is retired forever from Yankee uniforms, in reverence to Babe Ruth. [All MLB retired numbers]
Are these cowardly professors who also happen to be historic illiterates? Do they know the history of Washington & Lee University? Do they know the history and accomplishments of George Washington? ...of Robert E. Lee?
What will they accomplish by erasing history? Of what are they afraid? How will they cave in next?
I recommend that each and every one of them retire and get out; perhaps they should join BLM who also want to erase our country.
Washington also had a distillery and, horror of horrors, had his labor force net migrating fish in the Potomac River.
