An Illinois police chief is retiring 39 years after he stopped an assassin’s bullet intended for former President Ronald Reagan with his chest.

Tim McCarthy was part of Reagan’s Secret Service detail at the Washington Hilton Hotel when Reagan was shot in a lone-gunman assassination attempt on March 30, 1981.

After retiring from the Secret Service, McCarthy became the police chief in Orland Park.

He announced his retirement this week, saying that after 26 years on the job in the Chicago suburb, he wanted to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His retirement date is Aug. 1.

"It has been a great career," the 71-year-old McCarthy told WLS-TV on Wednesday. "I would do it for another 10 years but family, at some point, comes first."

second city:

Unenforceable Quarantine
How is this supposed to work exactly?
People coming to Chicago from 15 states experiencing a surge in coronavirus cases must self-quarantine for 14 days upon entering the city beginning next week, Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced late Thursday afternoon.

The city ordered the quarantine for anyone who has spent more than 24 hours in the following states before arriving in Chicago: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

The order, which will go into effect on Monday, does not apply to people who are at the airport for a connecting flight or driving through the city on their way elsewhere, city officials said.
And this works how again?
Is Groot setting up checkpoints?
Is CPD expected to pull over cars with out of state plates?
As a sanctuary state, is ICE going to allowed to stop illegal aliens?
She is so far over her head, it isn’t even remotely amusing.

Heckuva career, and a good time to retire from the policing business.

We should be celebrating this guy’s heroism. Instead, we’re having rolling riots over the death of a felon who was convicted for drug dealing and armed robbery.

I never noticed this before: The cops are looking at Reagan and away from the crowd!

Not good...

Gawd, that was a HORRIBLE day!

President Reagan came within millimeters of being killed. Of course, we didn’t learn of that until later.

Re: The guy who took a bullet. Thanks, but after 71 YEARS, family finally comes first? Huh?

John Hinkley jr should have been found guilty and executed.

McCarthy was not supposed to be on duty that day. At the last minute, the Secret Service received a request for an officer to provide protection to Reagan for an AFL-CIO luncheon on March 31. McCarthy and a colleague flipped a coin to see who would have to fill in on their day off; McCarthy lost.

He’s also the only Secret Service agent to purposely take a bullet for the president.

I agree. He’s out of prison, living the High Life with his parents.

Wonder what happens when they pass, and how do you go from INSANE to SANE after trying to kill a President?

The Charles Manson nutjobs are still all in prison, are they not?

Disgusting.

He didn’t take a bullet for Reagan. He was a bodyguard who caught a stray one in a hail of lead. It’s not like he threw his body in front of Reagan..he was supposed to watch the crowd for assassins.

I think one or two, including Manson himself, have become worm food in the last few years.
