Treatment with Hydroxychloroquine Cut Death Rate Significantly in COVID-19 Patients, Henry Ford Health System Study Shows

DETROIT – Treatment with hydroxychloroquine cut the death rate significantly in sick patients hospitalized with COVID-19 – and without heart-related side-effects, according to a new study published by Henry Ford Health System.

In a large-scale retrospective analysis of 2,541 patients hospitalized between March 10 and May 2, 2020 across the system’s six hospitals, the study found 13% of those treated with hydroxychloroquine alone died compared to 26.4% not treated with hydroxychloroquine. None of the patients had documented serious heart abnormalities; however, patients were monitored for a heart condition routinely pointed to as a reason to avoid the drug as a treatment for COVID-19.

The study was published today in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, the peer-reviewed, open-access online publication of the International Society of Infectious Diseases (ISID.org).

Patients treated with hydroxychloroquine at Henry Ford met specific protocol criteria as outlined by the hospital system’s Division of Infectious Diseases. The vast majority received the drug soon after admission; 82% within 24 hours and 91% within 48 hours of admission. All patients in the study were 18 or over with a median age of 64 years; 51% were men and 56% African American.

“The findings have been highly analyzed and peer-reviewed,” said Dr. Marcus Zervos, division head of Infectious Disease for Henry Ford Health System, who co-authored the study with Henry Ford epidemiologist Dr. Samia Arshad. “We attribute our findings that differ from other studies to early treatment, and part of a combination of interventions that were done in supportive care of patients, including careful cardiac monitoring. Our dosing also differed from other studies not showing a benefit of the drug. And other studies are either not peer reviewed, have limited numbers of patients, different patient populations or other differences from our patients.”

The truth starts coming out.

Yeah, but not the whole truth.

After studies were coming out about hydroxychloraquine, Dr. Oz was doing research to determine if any (many) people who have been taking it for many years had become infected with coronavirus. I saw him a few times on TV talking about it but never what he had found out. It seemed that he was having a very hard time getting information from the health insurance people (CMS?) who had such data.

If it turns out that taking HCQ or hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin plus zinc is a lifesaver for many people when taken early in the illness, I will consider so many governors especially Cuomo to have blood on their hands. Governor Cuomo was given 2000 or so doses but I think allowed them to be used only on people nearing the ventilator stage, thus sabotaging the study.

This happened way back near Easter. I thought that perhaps the whole course of the pandemic would change if there was such an inexpensive and available regimen to treat the disease.

These doctors are like the Deep State in the D.C. swamp - can't do anything to shake up the establishment, in this case big pharma. Thirteen percent treated with HCQ died compared to 26 percent who were not treated.

How about a third group treated with HCQ+Zn? It's quite possible a death rate of less, maybe much less, than 10 percent would have resulted if zinc was included. Big pharma will likely scoff at these results and keep pushing for studies of more, very expensive anti-virus cocktails.

Because Zinc is a supplement and many in the medical community turn their noses up at supplements because they don’t think they have any value.

Yes, it would have changed but can’t have that - would make President Trump look too good. Would save millions of lives!!!! Would help the economies of the world improve significantly.....would frustrate the goals of people like Fauci and Bill Gates.

I’m currently on Plaquenil - (Hydroxychloroquine) 200 mg x 2/day, for CREST syndrome (Rheumatoid/Scleroderma). It has worked very well for me and I hope it is the medicine we need to combat this virus.

The side effects are minimal and the media often confuses the two drugs chloroquine and hydroxycholorquine, I believe purposely.

I treated 85 patients with HCQ before I got remdesivir.

Short version: when I get COVID I want remdesivir.

I would be interested in the long version. How does HCQ compare with remdesivir? Cost? Side affects?

I think there is a fairly narrow window for antiviral therapy to work. Most people recover without it (don’t need it). The sweet spot is when things start to go bad, but before the inflammation and clotting take over.

My impression after four months is that the period in which HCQ is active is shorter than the period for RDV, and that you will have more “saves” with RDV.

Obviously RDV will cost a fortune and HCQ is cheap. I don’t find either one to be particularly toxic, almost all of the alarm about HCQ is Trump Derangement Syndrome.

“Zinc is a supplement and many in the medical community turn their noses up at supplements because they don’t think they have any value.”

That’s why I started taking Zinc every day added it to my daily handful of vitamins and minerals. So if I should take the hydroxycloroquine I will already have the Zinc working in my body.

Right, they’re not using zinc. And they’re not prescribing it early when it can do the most good. In fact, if everyone were given HCQ as a preventative for a month at most, we could wipe out this pandemic. But apparently, there’s no desire for that.
