The federal holiday swap would avoid putting US ‘further in debt,’ say amendment sponsors

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson and James Lankford on Wednesday introduced an amendment proposing to replace Columbus Day with (GOP senators propose...) Juneteenth as a new federal holiday to avoid putting the U.S. “further in debt.”

[snip] “In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” Johnson said Wednesday. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”

According to Johnson’s office, the economic cost of a single federal holiday has been estimated to be about $600 million for paid time off for federal employees.

“You know, Texas has been celebrating June 19th as a holiday since 1980”

Don’t disagree with your sentiments/statements and do not want to nit pick, but Juneteeth may have been given some kind official designation in Texas in 1980, but it has been celebrated in the Texas African American community much longer than that. I’m from East Texas and remember celebrations back into the 1960’s when I would start to notice such things.

Votes they’ll NEVER get.

These jackals are on the side of the people trying to remove all of western civilization and America and replace it with some Marxist regime.
This is an example. These cowardly pigs.

I think that Columbus Day and Juneteenth are completely separate issues.

We can discuss the historic legacy of Columbus, and whether his birthday should be a holiday. In my opinion, that is a completely separate discussion from whether Juneteenth deserves a federal holiday designation. But for some reason, unclear to me anyway, these discussions are being linked together.

I’m going to be a contrarian on this. Call it Emancipation Day—it can be in June and people can call it whatever they want—if some want to call it Juneteenth, that’s fine.

It would mark one of the great achievements of the U.S., the Republican Party, and the military of the United States. Those slaves didn’t free themselves, after all—the American nation, using force of arms freed them.

I have a feeling that if the Republican Party took this approach, it would give the left fits.

I think its worthy of a holiday. I would not bow to removing Columbus day though.

No.

  1. The event is not important enough to merit a holiday.

  2. It will be seen as a major victory for Antifa/BLM if this passes.

  3. It's too close to Memorial Day and Independence Day,

Yes, there is a date when all the slaves gained independence. That was the date of the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution - December 6th, 1865. The Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to the border states that remained loyal to the Union, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri as well as parts of Louisiana that were exempted. Furthermore, The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order that could have been rescinded at any time by a stroke of Andrew Johnson’s pen. The only significance of Juneteenth is that it marks the surrender of the last Confederate garrison in Texas.

Juneteenth should be a federally recognized holiday. And Trump should make that happen.

They are linked by the economic conservatives, who are saying that we should not give federal and state employees ANOTHER HOLIDAY. If you get a new one, we take one away.

This wouldn’t be “removing a holiday from the list”, just “removing a paid holiday”.

You could still celebrate columbus day, you just wouldn’t get a paid day off for it.

We already have two holidays for black people. we should just cut to the chase and declare the whole year to be a holiday.

“I’m going to be a contrarian on this. Call it Emancipation Day”

That’s probably a good idea. Let the GOP introduce it, own it, and control the narrative. How can BLM, etc., argue with “emancipation” in any context? Only trouble is, our GOP will roll over, and turn over the whole thing to the RATs.

"Isn’t the entire month of February a holiday for/about black people?"

Targeting holidays and or months of the year towards one race of people is in itself racist. We are all Americans or we are not all Americans. It is high time we get rid of the Martin Luther King holiday as well as "Black history month". Both of these currently serve to divide rather than unite us as a people. If black people are equal to white people, get rid of this pandering crap. Both of these insult blacks and their ability to be equal partners in this nation. If history is being destroyed right and left all over the country there is no need for a special month to devote to just 13% of the population.

Four trillion dollar deficit for the year and now they're worried about debt?
