Vermonts food scraps ban that starts July 1 is the last step in a multi-year process of reducing waste in landfills.
The Universal Recycling Law was unanimously passed by the state legislature in 2012 in response to the states stagnant recycling rates. According to a 2013 study, an estimated 50% of Vermonters' trash included recyclable or compostable materials, like food scraps and leaf and yard debris.
First, you need to find something to store the food scraps in. Morris recommended a large container with a lid, which can be recycled from something already on hand or bought from a hardware store. She said to empty it at least once a week, getting into the habit of taking it out or driving it to a drop-off site just like you would with normal trash and recycled materials.
There are three basic options for what to do with food scraps, according to Morris: compost them for yourself, hire a company to come pick it up from your home or take them to a drop-off site, like CSWD or Green Mountain Compost.

Drop them off at your favorite politician’s house. LOL
I will prepare for Vermont’s food scrap ban by not going to Vermont.
Easy. We have one tote and it acts as the single stream delivery device every Wednesday when waste management picks it up. EVERYTHING goes in. With an occasional 3 or 4 55gal bags of removed sage brush.
Vermont will soon stink of rotting food. Probably better than the stench of its communist politicians.
Won’t the rat population increase with this order?
Evidently, they have too many ‘Rats already.
They're everywhere.
The raccoon lobby really pushed for this.
I see no real benefit to this. If you are a serious gardener, you likely do this already. That’s nice. If you are not a gardener, this won’t help you. But food scraps don’t hurt anything. Thrown them in the trash, take them to a landfill, they will melt into the earth.
I see this as just more government control as they test to see how far they can push us.
Ha! Apparently it is believed such bans reduce the rodent population. I was thinking it would be like ringing the dinner bell. I do know plastic bins won’t deter the critters.
Vermont food scraps have been banned from my house for a long time.
“Now eat everything on your plate. Think of all those scraps in Vermont.”
Really. Imagine how much CO2 will be produced by having to drive your leftover salad or some distant collection point. Liberals always make a problem worse.
First, though, put the scraps in a monstrance and bless the landfill you are saving.
People in the most advanced, prosperous civilization in the history of mankind, with conveniences that even royalty of just a century ago could not dream of, now forced to sort through their leftovers to pick out the vegetables and put them in a different trash bin. So that they don’t temporarily take up a tiny amount of space at the landfill or something.
Odd, they are worried about half a burger and roll decomposing in their landfills but not batteries and plastic?
First, you need to find something to store the food scraps in. ....
This type of stupidity is where I question the need for government.
