Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Tuesday the proposed $1.5 billion NYPD budget slash didnt go far enough.
Defunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Educations budget so the exact same police remain in schools, the self-described Democratic Socialist said in a press release about the budget deal between the City Council and Mayor de Blasio.
It does not mean counting cuts in overtime as cuts, even as NYPD ignores every attempt by City Council to curb overtime spending and overspends on overtime anyways. The fight to defund policing continues, she said.
If these reports are accurate, then these proposed cuts to the NYPD budget are a disingenuous illusion. This is not a victory. The fight to defund policing continues, she said.
Mainstream Democrats and progressives have argued over the meaning of the effort to defund the police following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis cops.
The deal Ocasio-Cortez was referring to would cut the number of officers in the city by canceling its July class of 1,163 cadets.

I don’t dismiss what you are saying. They have been trying to replace “God” with government for decades.
It is still insane. An overwhelming majority of Americans support law enforcement and recognize that they are necessary for a civil society. Those who do not support the cops will in short order when there are no cops.
Just like the French revolution. The left gets eaten by the more extreme left.
I hope she gets her wish and New York City has no cops.

The NYPD is losing $1.5 billion in funding including canceling the July recruit class, cutting overtime and abandoning a plan for a new precinct with the money redistributed to social-welfare programs, in the fallout from the George Floyd protests, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio Tuesday.
By years end, the department headcount will decline to an estimated 34,837 from about 36,000, with the patrol force supplemented by reassigning cops now doing desk jobs, de Blasio said, promising the budget cuts wouldnt jeopardize public safety.
Love AOC? How: boiled, roasted, grilled?
Que tanto tiempo sea que tus huevos se te han hinchados por los policias, maricon?
So imagine if all the NYC police leave, all thirty thousand of them. Even your cellphone won’t be of any use there.
That’s not interpretive dance. She has chinches.

Defunding the police in 1933
I might give a damn what she said if she gave up ger personal security.
If the current political trajectory is not altered, AOC has a very good chance of being the POTUS in less than 10 years.
This dumb broad is beyond belief. I hope she gets mugged and gets her teeth knocked out in the process. Then maybe she might wish a cop were nearby acting as a crime deterrent for her safety.
There are too many 18-26 YOs who believe this nonsense, its like a cult. The problem is they don’t vote, this is an effort to get them to vote. Whats scary is it might work!
What percent of the population are criminals, or whose loved ones are criminals. Add to that the percentage of feelings-based followers, and you have the number of people who would go along with eliminating law enforcement.
Oh wait, I left out the Libertarians. (Just kidding. Or am I?)
She’s far too stupid to become a conservative.
Mrs Ed is a commie.Commies love police states. She is really for more police. More cops to round up climate change deniers, kulaks etc
Idiocracy was prophecy.
Well, well. Cortez advocating getting rid of even MORE jobs from NYC.
I just watched video of a shoot out in the streets of Minneapolis, guys firing hand guns, the non-stop sound of bullets, all the while cars driving by through all this. Is this what that idiot Cortez wants for NYC too? It will be Escape From New York very soon. That was a fun movie but I wouldnt want to live it.
