'I'm losing my mind': Bay Area residents report nonstop fireworks

The thunderous sound of fireworks — their blasts sudden, deafening and often terrifyingly similar to gunfire — have reverberated throughout the Bay Area in recent weeks.

Residents in the big cities and even in the quieter suburbs report the explosions started over Memorial Day weekend and have persisted through June, waking them in the night, interrupting their babies' naps and scaring their pets.

Fireworks packaging has been found around Lake Merritt in Oakland, and Nextdoor boards and Twitter are filling up with news of the booms and bangs in San Francisco.

"I’m losing my mind," said SF resident J. Barry. "We’re in South Bernal and it’s been super challenging for us. We rescued a dog at the start of quarantine, and she’s obviously not responding well to all of this, nor are our 4- and 6-year-old children. The M80s or M1000s are nothing short of heart stopping. One went off last night at 2:30 a.m. and shook our house, windows, ceiling fans. Our family of four was all up for about two hours trying to calm down. So we are all a mess today."

In Hayes Valley, someone posted a sign to a post reading, "Whoever is setting firecrackers in the neighborhood at night, please stop. It's freaking out all our dogs and they're terrified of the loud noises."

One Twitter user in San Francisco reported the fireworks are sometimes so loud that car alarms go off and apartment windows rumble.

The pyrotechnic activity mostly occurs at night, sometimes into the early morning hours. A Twitter user commented that the Palo Alto fireworks usually run from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. nightly.

Yes—CT big cities are canceling their July 4th fireworks—one example:

8 million cameras in NYC and no one can get pics of who’s setting these things off?

I generally hear a few fireworks each evening, but all quiet after 9 pm except crickets and a few cars until maybe 11 pm. Occasionally, thunderstorms continue through the night. For the exception on Saturday night, people lit off a fairly large number of firecrackers, apparently in celebration of the success of the Trump rally. No cicadas this year either.

In most summers, I notice extensive foot traffic (including chatter, music, and sometimes basketball) and occasional fireworks in the streets well after midnight. This deep nocturnal quietude began in March and continues still.

This can’t be happening in California. When I was a lad in the 50s, the only legal fireworks were ‘safe and sane’ which were basically sparklers and the like.

I’m surprised we haven’t heard as many fireworks this year as we usually do this time of year. We’ve no less than three Native American reservations that sell tons of the ‘really good kind’ within 15 miles. Normally by this time, we at least have a few shooting them off in the evening. hardly any so far.

I don’t think there is much as far as commercial grade fireworks being set off. Most of them need mortar type tubes to fire them and by now would have ended in at least a few BLM types (idiots) blowing themselves up. They are also not for sale to the general public. I think these are just nitwits setting off normal class C fireworks.

They were actually using aerial mortars in Portland three weeks ago in the riots there. They were firing them at the courthouse.

Out here where I live if you hear what sounds like fireworks after dark, it’s probably somebody poaching a deer or killing a bear or mountain lion.

Usually starts with one BANG, pause for about 20 to 40 seconds then 3 or 4 four quick follow up bang, bang, bangs.

Must just be poor shots or scared as hell.

Thank you for your informative post. “Antifa, BLM and Weatherundergound are exploiting this surplus.”

Problem. Antifa and leftists are very dumb and setting off fireworks to prepare for war against suburbs is, well, dumb.

In Hispanic areas in Los Angeles the powerful fireworks are popular. The users are dumb third worlders who think it is glamorous to set off fireworks from their homes.

Thankfully, LA and other counties have strict rules about fireworks. I have seen police cars drive around slowly and looking for the houses setting off the fire works. Police also use drones to fine the illegal fire work setters. Bunch of losers. Been going on for twenty years around 7/4.

If the losers foolishly decide to attack American neighborhoods, then they will be defeated easily.

Third world poor people love fireworks. Look at Manila every year. It is loud, dangerous and “cool” to people with boring lives.

Fireworks are cheap and they give the illusion Antifa has a larger ‘footprint’ than they really have...

The fear factor - as you mentioned = is also part of it. Making us wonder if gunfire is next. Here’s the good news... we’re getting to know who these folks are - and the city takeover drama is wearing thin... the fire cracker bit will too. People of Color mayors are losing credibility... and the crap in the streets is being blamed on THEM not on the police who were told to stand down... so it’s all backfiring. When we win the control of the cities the ‘fireworks’ crap will be next.

Leftwing crazies like noise.

It’s why commies had ‘drum circles’ at their rallies ... the noise made people feel SOMETHING was happening.

Wonder also if this is something coordinated. All over. Many cities.

Spoke to a Queens, NY friend this morning. She told me that she and her husband are going crazy from the firecrackers going off every night, even until 3 or 4 in the morning. Here in Baltimore, some idiots are putting off firecrackers between 10 p.m. and midnight, but they must have run out of them tonight. Good.

Not only do I remember Red Devil fireworks, I’m old enough to remember that the U.S.Postal Service would deliver them to our house.

Why now? This has never been a problem before? Clue(?): It’s happening all over the country. How are they being purchased, or perhaps better, who is providing them?

This has the smell of being related to the chaos being promoted around the country.

A few yrs ago I visited Pgh and was there on 4th of July. After fireworks ended I took subway back to Steel Plaza station and started walking toward my car, parked nr the Carnegie Sci Center. Heard what I thought was firecrackers but then police sirens. Found out later online someone had been shooting at people right next to the next station down, Wood St. A couple people were injured and they didn’t catch the shooters, as far as I know. Gunshots, again, sounded like firecrackers... I could have gotten off at Wood St and been right around there... Am going back to Pittsburgh for the Fourth weekend but staying just out of town on the 4th, but downtown on the 5th.
