Over half of all restaurants are going to go under.
All these great ideas are being forced on us by people who have absolutely no experience in running a business.
No crap. Not many restaurants can make money at 25% capacity. These business owners are being completely denied any economic use of their property, allegedly for the public good. That is the textbook definition of a regulatory taking, and they should be compensated.
I’ve never been an FDR fan, and I never thought “We have nothing to fear but fear itself” was all that profound.
But I am reassessing my opinion of that quote. I think COVID-19 is pretty much the flu. I don’t see the virus as a significant game changer. But our reaction (over-reaction) has totally changed everything. I think a lot of things will never be the same again. And it’s not because of the virus; its because of the fear.
Or running anything else, for that matter. “Running” something implies some sort of responsibility, which is completely lacking in politicians and bureaucrats.
What “expert” came up with 25%? Like the rest of the Great Suppression, it’s completely arbitrary.
Noticed since reopening in many of these restaurants the service really sucks And in some cases both as a couple we frequent the service has really gone downhill and quality of food as well. It’s like they have all forgotten the Customer is the sole reason for being and get all pissy when they do not get the tip they think they should for poor service..Actually had a waitress tell me the reason she hadn’t come back to our table was due to being stressed over the virus but expected me to tip her 40%...True story.
Yes sadly the new business model is going to be to go out of business.
Theoretically all these restaurants and diners could stay in business if they increase their prices. But then you run into consumer resistance to higher prices.
The restaurant business as we know it could be fundamentally transformed. At a bare minimum restaurants and diners will need to have substantial outdoor seating and also have a drive-in window. Otherwise they just may not be able to make ends meet.
The only thing that makes the quote relevant today is that the fear is being gaslighted by the media. If they and the Dems had the same focus on the annual flu nobody would go outside either.
Yup - just like airline travel. I miss my family walking with me all the way to the gate to say good-bye when I take a trip.
I am old enough to remember airline travel when there was no TSA security lines and hassles, planes were half empty, the stewardesses were drop-dead gorgeous, and they served good meals for free in coach on any flight over a couple of hours.
These days I avoid flying unless absolutely unavoidable. It is changed from a wonderful experience to a nasty ordeal.
I don’t see the problem here. Just rehire 1/2 waiter, 1/3 of a chef, and 1/4 of a dishwasher. No problemo.
Easily half of restaurants are going to go bankrupt. State could just flat out open up restaurants to max capacity, and many will take months to get back to 2/3rds capacity. Some people are chomping at the bit to get back to eating out, but too many are used to cooking and eating at home now while others are fearful of getting Covid 19 at a restaurant at full capacity. By the time people work up to filling most restaurants to 2/3rds capacity, half the restaurants will be bankrupt.
What a calamity. Thanks, Governors. All because only those over 80 years old are at extreme risk.
What if all of the patrons agree to say that they’re protesting. In many places that moves the limits up to 100 people.
I took my first flight in 1970.
I used to fly for business on Southwest in the 80’s and 90’s.
Buuut, they do have experience on how to destroy the middle class...
They know they will not open at twenty five percent...there just prolonging the opening...
I live in a small town..The restaurant have lines out the door...Annnnd that’s because only 25% capacity..If it wasn’t summer ,there would be no lines...The restaurants would go out of business
The centralization and squeeze on our food supply and distribution continues apace.
That to me is a serious indicator that the restaurant industry was totally over-built and would have faced a major downsizing even without a COVID-19 outbreak.
