Theodore Roosevelt statue will be removed from the front steps of the Museum of Natural History

A statue of President Theodore Roosevelt in front of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City will be removed, a statement from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's office said Sunday.

Following the museum's request to remove the statue, which features the nation's 26th President on a horse with a Native American man standing on one side and an African man standing on the other, the mayor's office announced the approval.

The announcement comes as several state's grapple with how to handle removals of confederate monuments and other controversial statues.

"The American Museum of Natural History has asked to remove the Theodore Roosevelt statue because it explicitly depicts Black and Indigenous people as subjugated and racially inferior," de Blasio's office said in a statement to CNN. "The city supports the museum's request. It is the right decision and the right time to remove this problematic statue."

While it was meant to celebrate Roosevelt as a "devoted naturalist and author of works on natural history," the statue also "communicates a racial hierarchy that the museum and members of the public have long found disturbing," a press release on the museum's website said.

“The History Removal Museum.”

I had the good fortune to tour a “art banned by the Nazis” exhibit in Israel when I was a kid — most of which is now back from whence it came (e.g., the Lovre, etc).

It was really cool.

The Nazis’ reasons for banning were various, but similar here — the ethnicity of the artist, had a religious theme they didn’t like, showed values they didn’t like, were owned by people they didn’t like, whatever.

“When #ANTIFA goes after the Hall of Presidents, “

Been twice since Trump was president.

First time, a women had a literal break down when Trump was speaking. The show had to stop, and she was escorted out.

Second time, rude catcalling (with tons of kids present).

My guess his days are numbered at Disney.

Will they spare the mice? They wear whiteface and dress like Pilgrims

Teddy Roosevelt endured a torrent of abuse, particularly from the New York newspapers, when when he was the first president to ever invite a black man to dinner at the White House, his guest being Booker T. Washington.

Take down the statue, change the history books. I'm sure you're thinking of his esteemed cousin, Franklin.

I’d just use a sawzall and cut away the Indian and negro, leaving Ted all by himself.

That was my first thought but they'd say that it was disrespectful to the POCs who were removed.

You can't win with them.

A great American President.

Reached that august office when his predecessor, William McKinley, was assassinated by an anarchist.

And anarchists are still around, still causing trouble.

The problem is he was white. Let’s call it what it is, a war on white men

I have been thinking that exact thing now, for the last couple of days.

Who are the real racists? These people pulling down statues seem to hate white people generally; and, white men of accomplishment in particular.

This is a war on accomplished men, especially those who are white. If there is a statue of Thomas Edison someplace, I'm sure it will be gone shortly.

If you know my posts around here, you’ll know I’m no TR fan.

I’ve always found this statue to be singularly ridiculous, as it was essentially an extension of TR’s id, little more.

His record on race is, shall we say, complicated, but so is all of American history. TR was not a racist.

He was, however, a WASP supremacist, which is not unkind, as he defended Anglo-Saxon traditions and law and that is right and good.

Neither TR nor Grant nor Washington nor Lincoln nor Taft, nor any of the other WASP supremacists were interested in race: they were insistent upon the nature of the Anglo-Saxon legacy and how it ought to benefit ALL Americans of all religions, ethnicities and races.

In no other place or time has a dominant culture not only shared but demanded equality with its inferiors.

We need to celebrate this statue not apologize for it.

This is what I was wondering. What is the spirit of the thing and on the sculpture’s mind? What is it meant to represent?

How long before the faces on Mount Rushmore are replaced with Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Malcolm X, and Michelle Obama?

I'm sure the fact he was a Republican wasn't a factor. Or a police commissioner. And then there's the attack on hispanics on Kettle/San Juan Hill. With Buffalo Soldiers on his flank I believe, but that counts for nothing

I've noticed that liberals today don't seem to give much credit to Teddy Roosevelt for being a trust-busting "progressive" of his day. I think this has to do with the fact that a blind hatred for the men who built western civilization has become the defining features of today's "progressives", as opposed to economic or even social issues.

Replace Teddy’s statue with another one of Robert C. Byrd, former democrat senator and former “Exalted Cyclops” of the KKK and beloved democrat icon.

They won’t dare complain about that unless they are ready to tear down and/or rename the hundreds of monuments and places named in his honor
