Back when the coronavirus pandemic cases started picking up in early Spring, many Americans and experts asked: Should we be wearing masks?
In response, some public health officials, such as the U.S. Surgeon, said that masks weren't necessary for the general public.
And then the public was told that, actually, masks are good to wear to help prevent the spread and also allow you to go out without anxiety of anyone coming within six feet of you.
Dr. Fauci joined TheStreet to talk about why masks are important when you leave the house, and to better explain why there was back and forth in the beginning.
"Masks are not 100% protective. However, they certainly are better than not wearing a mask. Both to prevent you, if you happen to be a person who may feel well, but has an asymptomatic infection that you don't even know about, to prevent you from infecting someone else," said Fauci. "But also, it can protect you a certain degree, not a hundred percent, in protecting you from getting infected from someone who, either is breathing, or coughing, or sneezing, or singing or whatever it is in which the droplets or the aerosols go out. So masks work."
So, why weren't we told to wear masks in the beginning?
"Well, the reason for that is that we were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply. And we wanted to make sure that the people namely, the health care workers, who were brave enough to put themselves in a harm way, to take care of people who you know were infected with the coronavirus and the danger of them getting infected."

How many times do people need to be told that government employees will throw you to the wolves in a second to save themselves some trouble? From the surgeon general telling us that wearing a mask could be more dangerous than not wearing one to police telling us that we have no need for guns because they will protect us - right before they abandon whole sections of cities to rioters and thugs. The government protects itself even if it has to kill you to do it.
NJ has freedom zones and commie zones
If you are in a commie zone the commie mask is required
the freedom zone, nobody cares because Murphy can shove it up his behind.
welcome to Jersey, technically it should be two states/countries America in some areas and Soviet Russia in the others.
Hey, Lil’Anthony, time to get off the stage. Shut up and fade into obscurity.
If you still think masks dont work then, Fauci duped you and it is time to wise up.If you think a mask works, wear one.
Now tell me why I need a mask if you're wearing one.
“It was truly amazing to see all of the people lined up to witness his funeral.”
We lived about 1 mile from the Reagan Library when he died — 1/2 mile as the crow flies. Hundreds of cars came by for about three days after the news came out. They would drop off flowers, notes, pics, etc., at the corner of Madera and Presidential. The area would have to be cleared often to make room for more.
So true. Like pretzels.
Not really. All of the big stores that anyone will want to go to require the mask even in the North Western parts and Southern parts. No getting around this unless you want to set yourself up to be hassled.
It was statewide; unlike NY state, which is applying different regulations in different parts, these were blanket regulations in NJ.
The entire state isn’t infected with Karens
I have been to plenty of places that just didn’t care because it is all fake
Exactly....He told EVERYONE that masks weren’t necessary. And as late as Feb 29th, he was telling the entire country....don’t worry about the virus.
Thanks for publishing this again. It’s a farce.
“politically correct snot rags”
LMAO! I just spewed lemongrass tea on my monitor-but may I have your permission to use and share that phrase with others?there is a neighbor who scolds anyone at the hardware store not wearing a mask-even though she is the only one wearing a mask...-
feel free to use the term far and wide
Thank you-I certainly will do that...
"Virtue signaling" is never fine
It is the sin of PRIDE.
This guy’s ‘explanations’ never comport with his previous statements.
They didn’t just not tell us to wear masks, they were saying exactly the opposite - *don’t* wear them.
I agree. I, too, am in the people's republic of new jersey, and we are mandated to wear masks in grocery stores, so I simply go with the bandana over my nose & mouth and tied around the back of my neck.
I look like a guy who is about to rob a train on horseback in the 1880's.
It does nothing to prevent the transmission of anything, but it allows me to get into a store to buy food. I pull it down as soon as I am out of the store and in the vestibule on my way out. This has gotten me some dirty looks from some Karens, but I really don't care. It's all theater at this point. I have not and will not be wearing a mask outside.
If you are in a vulnerable population (elderly, obese, immune-compromised), then by all means; stay home, be diligent about your health and avoid the 'maskless demons' like me. Please don't demand that the other 99% of the population acquiesce to your fear and curtail our daily lives to this ridiculous degree.
“If you still think masks dont work then, Fauci duped you and it is time to wise up.”
Nonsense. Medical staffs have always worn masks, and for reasons other than virus infection, like fluid splash, etc.
Healthy people wearing masks over CV19 are fools. All you need is a little distance and don’t stay in poorly ventilated areas with other people.
Most everyone is going to catch this virus anyway. No need to add other problems to the virus.
“I simply go with the bandana...”
My bandana hangs around my neck. No one has said a word, but most people here have already stopped wearing masks.
