Challenger Bob Good has ousted Rep. Denver Riggleman, R-5th in a rancorous drive-thru convention for the party's nomination.
Voting in the all-day convention at a church in Campbell County concluded at 7 p.m., but party officials did not announce the results until after 1 a.m.
Fifth District GOP chairman Melvin Adams said 2,537 delegates voted Saturday. Good said he received 58% of the tally.
On Twitter Riggleman asserted that "voting irregularities and ballot stuffing has been reported in multiple counties" in the district. He added: "We are evaluating all our options at this time."
As for Riggleman's allegations, Good said: "That's what losers say."
In seeking a second term, Riggleman, who runs Silverback Distillery with his wife, faced tough competition from Good, a former Campbell County supervisor and Liberty University employee.
Riggleman faced a backlash among some conservative activists in the sprawling district after he officiated in 2019 at a gay wedding for two men who had volunteered for his campaign. Riggleman, who touts a libertarian streak, says Republicans need to expand their base and have a “big tent” philosophy.
The controversy has made the 5th District convention something of a test case for the Virginia GOP, which has not won a statewide race since 2009 and which has lost ground to Democrats in the state’s congressional delegation and the legislature during President Donald Trump’s term. Riggleman is one of four Republicans left in Virginia’s U.S. House delegation. All four serve largely rural districts.

Some good news in Virginia. The GOP ousted creepy freshman pro-Sodomite Denver Riggleman.
Excuse me, but what was is record as a Congressman? If he was 100% Supporting Trump and he got defeated because he officiated at a gay wedding, that is stupid. I know you hate me for saying this, but we need to get pass the gay issue as it will not be a winner with my generation. My generation wants to lower taxes, more gun rights, but who the F cares if John Smith and John Doesn’t are in love? You older people didn’t grow up with it being open. Two conservative friends of mine, who will be voting Trump, are engaged. Let’s stop the antigay BS, or you’ll be driving yuth away.
Good. My daughter lives in the district. I looked the other day and saw there was no primary so I assumed Riggleman was unopposed. Didn’t know about the convention.
As one of four known conservatives in Charlottesville, She will be a Good voter.
Not so sure on that. From another report on the subject: "Further complicating the race is that Mr. Good, a former Campbell County supervisor, failed to correctly file the paperwork to be named on the ballot in November’s general election, setting up a possible catastrophe for Republicans should he advance. The Virginia Republican Party has asked the state board of elections to extend the filing deadline."
And this upset ends Trump's perfect record on candidate endorsements.

There are over a dozen Democratic and Republican campaigns in Virginia that did not correctly file their paperwork on time. I have a contact who running one of those campaigns. He informed me that there is much uncertainty in regards to when paperwork is to be filed due to governor “Blackface who comforts newborn babies while he decides how to murder them” executive orders regarding large gatherings. Regardless, he tells me that the bi-partisan board of elections has a ten-day waiver rule that is in place for the asking. The state GOP has asked for this waiver in regard to candidates who missed the deadline. As far as Riggleman goes I have attended a number of fundraisers where he is one of the speakers or glad handers and I find him to be full of himself, crude with the personal skills of a dock worker. I was very much surprised that he was elected to congress and saw it as a fluke. That said I guess his distillery makes good spirits.
Many people, old and young, find gay behavior offensive. If you and your friends do not, that's up to you. The gay population is something in the neighborhood of 4%, though they work like crazy to give the impression that it's much higher. At a time when liberals are trying to destroy the very fabric of our society, it seems silly for people to pick support or not for homosexuality as a litmus test for a candidate who is otherwise supportive of conservative causes. The Supreme Court has already established homosexuals as a class protected from discrimination, so there's nothing any political office holder could do to thwart homosexual rights.
That said, one running for office better know his or her constituents. Riggleman is in a very conservative, highly religious district. He essentially thumbed his nose at many of the constituents who voted him into office and yesterday they expressed their displeasure. Fortunately, it should be a safe seat for the new nominee.

People on Twit make a good case that the convention there, instead of a primary, guarantees weak candidates.
It's a tough call. Unfortunately, Virginia has open primaries so a primary gives Dems the opportunity to impact who the Republican nominee will be.

If the personal behavior of the two John’s were the only thing at stake, you’d be right. But most Republicans also care about kids bring taught homosexuality and transgenderism in the public schools, whether doctors will be forced to do sex change operations, bakers will be forced to make gay wedding cakes, male soldiers will be at the mercy of homosexual commanding officers, etc. A congressman will have to vote on all these issues.

Now when are the feckless VA Republicans going to oust the likes of Spanberger and Gov Blackface. They allowed many Dems win seats in the VA house by have no candidate running in the district. They gave the radical Dems control of VA.
I wonder what would have happened if this Congressman had officiated at the gay wedding of Ric Grennel, the Sodomite?
District was 53% Trump (11 point win), 6.5% win for Romney in 2012. 20% Black.
It contains the cancer known as Charlottesville, University of VA.
And the rat candidates have all raised a lot more money than Good, who will need some cash and to watch out for knives from Riggleman. Riggleman complains about the convention process but he himself was chosen 2 years ago as a replacement nominee by an even small voter pool. Letting committed Republicans make the choice is better than an open primary.
So “safe”, no. But it should be held, barring disaster (like Virgil Goode’s loss in 2008).
Grennell presumably can’t help being homo no more than CT’s friends. He’s done good work and so deserves our praise.
That doesn’t mean we have to pretend one man sodomizing another man is a “marriage” to the extent our Congressman are officiating their “weddings”. Does it?
I don’t care what they do, but like Bob says, what about the children? I’d go far as saying a gay couple is an improvement over an orphanage but they aren’t adopting unwanted kids, they are paying desperate or immoral women to carry their seed and have babies.
