Seeking a city willing to allow a large-scale event amid the coronavirus pandemic, Republicans have tentatively settled on Jacksonville, Fla., as the new destination for the premier festivities of the Republican National Convention in August, according to three Republican officials briefed on the plans.
The details of the arrangement are still in flux and RNC aides are scrambling to determine whether the northern Florida city has enough hotel rooms to accommodate the quadrennial event, which typically kicks off the final stretch of the presidential campaign.
Republican officials were in Jacksonville on Monday looking at the city and the surrounding areas.

The highly unusual decision to seek an alternative location for the conventions marquee events - including speeches by President Trump and others - stems from Trumps desire to accept his partys nomination before an enormous crowd.

Could be because Orlando has all Democrats (Orlando City Mayor, Congresswoman, Orange County Commission, Orange County Mayor). Hell, even the dogcatcher is probably a Democrat!
Gop Mayor
Living in Jacksonville, I’m looking forward to it....
The Arena downtown if fairly new and modern, it seats about 14,000 and can be configured in a number of different ways, it has a series of skyboxes to handle the media and high dollar doners...they’re a number of fairly large hotels in the area, Hyatt, Hilton, Omni, etc...it’s on the water so people can conceivably use the water for transportation, especially from hotels across the river from the arena...
The Beaches are 10-12 miles away along with an endless supply of top notch golf courses, the PGA Tour is located at the Beach and The Players Championship is played here every year....
It’s certainly a smaller city compared to others but we did have a Super Bowl a number of years ago....
I am really surprised because NE Florida and Jacksonville are solid Red areas but I think it will be huge boost to the local economy...
The host city best make sure the air conditioners are in very good working order. In August the heat can be downright unpleasant in Florida.
Orlando will be hosting the NBA playoffs while this is all going on. Between competing for hotel space and dealing with that zoo, Orlando was never even considered.
Jacksonville has a Republican mayor, and city council is 2/3 Republican. This means no Dem games with ordering cops to stand down for Antifa.
I hope republicans repeatedly hammer home to North Carolinians that they lost millions of dollars thanks to the democrat dick they elected governor.
Maybe they figure it helps Georgia, too - Jacksonville is just over the border.
I have a dream where DJT holds a rally in AT&T Stadium in Arlington just prior to the election and puts 50-60k in there.
You can bet that the left and their ANTIFA thugs will do everything to shut that thing down along with every rally leading up to it.
Communist Gov Cooper.
NC despises that ilk.
Bet your sweet bippie if it was the DNC, there would be NO restrictions on having it in Charlotte.
And we know this- hope you enjoyed your only term as Gov, Coop. You are intentionally destroying our beautiful state and we won’t forget at the voting booth.
I’m thinking that the Cruise Lines @ Jacksonville would cut a good deal to have some RNC conventioneers stay on their Boats which are now tied up at docks with all the cruises cancelled.
That’s thousands of additional “hotel rooms”!
“Pravda on the Potomac”
Texas, if anyone’s wondering...
Looking forward to the prospect. I will be part of the Maryland delegation. We were planning on driving to Charlotte. With some of the family in Melbourne and a granddaughter in Orlando, we will be taking some side-trips should Jax be the result.
We are not all Marla Maple's Mr President or Jeff Sessions LOL
Cuts driving time in half if I want to “be in the area”...
And hope one of those bitches from the Hurricane name list doesn’t show up.
LOL, I have been having that dream too! (except I’m picturing 70-80k). Trump could draw that many easily, but they’ll have to figure out security first.
