A 43-year-old German man who travelled around Portugal in a camper van is now the focus of Scotland Yard's investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann 13 years ago.
Police believe the man, now in jail for a sex crime, was in the area where the girl, then aged three, was last seen.
Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate McCann thanked the police, adding: "All we have ever wanted is to find her."
Police are appealing for information about two vehicles owned by the man.
The day after Madeleine vanished, the suspect transferred a Jaguar car to someone else's name.
Madeleine went missing from an apartment on a Portuguese holiday resort on the evening of 3 May 2007, while her parents were with friends at a nearby tapas bar.
Her disappearance sparked a huge and costly police hunt across much of Europe - the most recent Metropolitan Police investigation, which began in 2011, has cost more than £11m.
"Someone out there knows a lot more than they're letting on," said Det Ch Insp Mark Cranwell, who is leading the Met inquiry.

That would be the Podesta brothers.
Oddly enough, they haven’t found the Jaguar. It’s probably outside Germany, and likely outside of the EU.
Knowing Jaguars, a 1993 is probably now a 2012 Mercedes...........................
“identify” must mean something besides publicly identify. In Germany, they supposedly cannot even release names of criminals after conviction? How are they going to find witnesses if they can’t release the name?
“Knowing Jaguars, a 1993 is probably now a 2012 Mercedes...........................”
It took me longer than it should have to LOL.
They tended to rust out......................on the dealer’s lot....................
Back in the 1984 time frame, in Germany...there was a US Warrant Officer who’d bought a Jag (maybe in the 7-year range). He’d paid a fair sum of money. Over a period of 18 months, he’d pulled out around $5k on repairs (minimum of five serious problems).
One day on the autobahn between Frankfurt and Stuttgart...it’d failed again. I don’t know what overcame the guy, but he pulled out a rag...opened the fuel tank...flicked the lighter, and set the car on fire (on the autobahn). German cops came...he got some serious fine, and the Army probably had a long talk with the guy.
In this case, it wouldn’t surprise me if the car was in Romania or Bulgaria....maybe sitting in some junk-yard for parts.
Was that a larger problem than reliability?
Ford bought Jaguar from British Leyland in 1990 and quality improved until they sold it during the Great Recession of 2008, to Tata Motors (Indian Billionaire). I hear it’s even better now.................
Six of one, half dozen of the other!.....................
They should just follow the trail of dripping oil.
I'm surprised it even started.
British newspaper has name & picture. Details of supposed botched Portuguese investigation immediately after her disappearance. Did not secure crime scene, police did not protective clothing, smoked & flicked ashes in room, let maids launder linens...
Water boarding gets answers fast.
Doesn’t work on everybody, though...............
A German prisoner. Uh, ok. That was so very super duper easy and a rubber stamp. No effort extended.
Makes no sense. They couldn’t have done better by hanging a sign on the door, “Free Kids”.
