Budget meeting after budget meeting, theyd turn out with their petitions and signs, demanding the city put less money into its police department and more money into programs that stop crimes from happening in the first place affordable housing, addiction counseling, violence prevention programs.
The council's been listening.
I think weve had a vision for a while of wanting to see another kind of city response to those calls, says Council Member Steve Fletcher, whose Ward 3 covers parts of downtown.
Calls about mental health crises could be answered by mental health professionals. Calls about opioid abuse could be answered by addiction experts. Instead, both get cops, usually armed.
Their discussion is starting to sound a little more like what groups like Reclaim the Block and the Black Visions Collective have been saying for years. On Tuesday, Fletcher published a lengthy Twitter thread saying the police department was irredeemably beyond reform, and a protection racket that slows down responses as political payback.
Several of us on the council are working on finding out what it would take to disband the Minneapolis Police Department and start fresh with a community-oriented, nonviolent public safety and outreach capacity, he wrote.

What could go wrong
They tried this crap starting in the 1960s in major US cities. Anybody who lived during those times know what happened.
I’m in complete support.
$22 TRILLION and counting spent on those things. How has it worked out?
Gotta hand it to the Dems...they are 100% immune to empirical results and cause and effect. It's quite a feat to ignore real-world results.
Go for it. Turn your city into a free fire war zone. It’s what you deserve for being Leftist idiots.
Do it! What could go wrong?
I dare them.
Absolutely. When your enemy is threatening to light himself on fire you don’t blow out the match.
I'm with you, brother. I'll watch the results from afar - from the beaches at the shore.
And here I was thinking Trump probably wouldn’t win Minnesota...
Fence the place off.
Sell tickets just like they do at the zoo.
Maybe put in a monorail so you can observe them safely from above.
If mental health and drug calls get counselors .... what do murders and robberies get?
The 4 stages of Santa Clause:
1) You believe in Santa Clause.
2) You don’t believe in Santa Clause.
3) You are Santa Clause.
4) You look like Santa Clause.
Apparently, Council Member Steve Fletcher never made it past Stage 1 for some reason.

I am actually all In favor of the big cities doing this. Let them rot while the rest of us prosper outside the cities. Its a change in our lifestyle as I am a huge fan of big cities like New York and Chicago. This seems like the solution preferred by the majority in these areas, so...good luck!
Do it a-holes. But come crying when your city turns to $hit.
Face Palm Matters.
