Asphyxiation not the cause of George Floyd's death: Autopsy
The Washington Times ^ | Friday, May 29, 2020 | Valerie Richardson

George Floyd died Monday from a combination of preexisting health conditions exacerbated by being held down by Minneapolis officers, not from strangulation or asphyxiation, based on the medical examiner’s initial report.

Preliminary findings from a Tuesday autopsy conducted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner found “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation,” according to the criminal complaint filed Friday against former officer Derek Michael Chauvin.

“Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease,” said the complaint from the Hennepin County Attorney. “The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

The Minneapolis police officer fired earlier this week was charged Friday with third-degree murder and manslaughter after kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Video showed he was unresponsive for the last 2 minutes and 53 seconds.

“Police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous,” the complaint said.

According to the filing, officers confronted Mr. Floyd after receiving a 911 call saying that he had paid for merchandise at Cup Foods with a phony $20 bill. They found him nearby in his vehicle with an adult male and female.

Mr. Floyd, who was six feet tall and weighed over 200 pounds, was handcuffed and led to the squad car, but resisted getting inside, saying he was claustrophobic.

While standing, he said repeatedly he couldn’t breathe. Mr. Floyd struggled as officers tried to force him into the car and fell to the ground. Two officers held him down while Officer Chauvin pressed his knee on the suspect’s neck.

Mr. Floyd said “I can’t breathe” multiple times, as well as

They will charge the cops anyway to appease the mob and hopefully dial down the likelihood of nationwide rioting.

The way he collapsed approaching the patrol car, it looked like something was wrong already.

Oh. Okay. In other words, he died of natural causes.

See, you wacky rioters? You got yourself all worked up over nothing. Don't you feel silly now?

These cops are innocent. The medical examiner could find no sign of suffocation, or of being choked. He also said that Floyd had health problems such as heart disease and high blood pressure. The medical examiner finished the autopsy BEFORE this became a big deal, and he found that he died of his heart problems, and not from being choked. The officers called for medical very early in the process. Floyd was having problems breathing for sure, but probably because he was having a heart attack. Ever seen or heard of someone being suffocated to death by only applying pressure to the back of the neck? I would say it’s almost not possible. Try to choke yourself only by applying pressure to the back of the neck. Eric Garner died the same way Floyd did.

I’m betting he had multiple drugs in his system. His demeanor when he was first contacted by police was a dead giveaway.

“The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

What does “potential” mean?

Either they found intoxicants or not.

Looks like the FR wing of the Minneapolis lynch mob will have to go back to COVID to express their self righteousness.

The officers called for medical very early in the process.

So if they suspected a medical condition like a heart attack, why the knee on the neck then?

Pressure was applied to the *side* of the neck. Not the back. You know, where the major blood vessels to the brain are?

Also, keep in mind this is the same ME that tried to avoid declaring that yet another Minneapolis police officer had shot a white woman whose only offense is that she had reported a crime. I wouldn’t believe a word they said.

Also, the toxicology reports are not back yet. The original 911 caller said Floyd was intoxicated. The police just released new body cam video, and there was medical on the way from early on, way before all the cops were on top of him.

Eric Garner - NYC, cops put a chokehold on him, he complained he couldn’t breath, and had a heart attack as I recall.

The police involved SHOULD be charged. I'm a doc, and this autopsy is standard conjecture. When you can't breath, or your breathing is just restricted, and you're scared of dying because someone is holding you down with their knee on your neck, you release a lot of catecholamines (e.g. adrenaline). You can also become hypoxic without dying from asphyxiation, and either of the previous can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and death. The proximal cause is overreaction and overzealous policing. If your grandfather, or father had/has coronary artery disease and they died of a myocardial infarction or an arrhythmia when someone mugged them, wouldn't you feel that the mugger was responsible for their death?

The officers called for medical... and than put their knee on his neck for 8 minutes?

They sure cared about his health and well being...

NOT

If the knee was shutting off the carotid artery, that would stop blood going to the brain. Or, was he pepper sprayed?

The police were told he could not breathe. Still they kept him on the ground while he said he could not breathe. How did keeping him on the ground get him into the cop car? He was murdered by the one cop and the others should be charged as accessories.

“This is Eric Garner on Staten Island all over again.”

Resisting arrest when you’re a walking heart attack is a poor choice.
