NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) A jewelry store south of Muskegon has started offering select groceries as a way to be deemed essential and therefore stay open in case of a future shutdown.
Owner Karl Krautheim says the shop, Krautheim & Swanson GemWorks on Harvey Street near E. Hile Road in Norton Shores, has been in his family for more than 130 years.
My great-grandfather started this jewelry business in Muskegon in 1887, Krautheim said. Weve been there through the Spanish flu back in 1918, World War I, World War II, the Depression
But the coronavirus pandemic could cause the business to close its doors for good. Because of shutdowns aimed at slowing the spread of the virus, the store opened Wednesday for the first time in 10 weeks.
Unsure what tomorrow may bring but certain his familys store cant survive another shutdown, Krautheim has added a few essential items to the shops collection.
Beans and soup and tomato sauce, Krautheim described a small display of canned goods lined up opposite the jewelry cases.

Gun shops should add a snack bar.
Guns and Coffee!
There was at least one State where stores like Walmart couldn’t sell certain items. I dont remember the gist of it but Govt deemed the items to be nonessential. So Walmart had to block the areas off.
So, in theory, the same could be done to the jeweler.
But at least he is being creative trying to find a solution.
Only points out the stupidity and bureaucracy of regulations on everything.
Our Walmart was fully open during the last few months.
Yes and actually, Im miffed 5at Wal-Mart gets to open the entire store here, be crowded with people, allegedly dangerous!, all because they have food on one end.
But stores selling those same items, who DONT have food, have to stay shut here in MD. Kohls, any real dept store. No food, no open. Food, open the whole store!
I’m actually surprised stores didn’t pull this move right from the get go. Probably would have created a reaction from the bureaucrats if it had become widespread I suppose.
Steal them if its non-essential.

Nope but not far. Ontario Canada. Most businesses are shuttered and just now slowly emerging again. Costco and Walmart were open except in Walmart the McDonalds was roped off and Costco shut down the free samples and only hot dogs and ice cream to take out only at their snack bar.
There is a computer store near by that shut the store but you could order online and they had a desk at the entrance where you could do pickup and drop off repairs. They also never completely closed.
I’ve been saying that for a while. Buy a box of Twinkies and put a $10 each price tag on them then open for business.
One of the funniest things to come out of this is all the people ranting and raving they would do well home schooling their kids who then changed their tune when it actually happened
teaching is a tough gig
kids reactions to their parents trying to homeschool has led to some very funny moments
I’m surprised more shops and real estate offices didn’t do this. I was touting this after the first week of seeing the grocery stores and walmart, BJ’s remain open.
Part of it was also shuttered businesses saying it was unfair they couldn’t sell gardening supplies or dresses but Walmart could.
No need to, as they were deemed essential businesses shortly after states tried to close them down. 8>)
Black Rifle Coffee Company. It’s a thing.
