Officials are delineating the parameters of relaxing stay-at-home orders that have throttled the global economy, yet a few companies are already giving the public a glimpse of life once stringent coronavirus restrictions begin winding down.
Currently, states and cities are crafting a pell-mell retreat away from lockdowns designed to contain the COVID-19 crisis but that have decimated growth and the jobs market. Yet, it's widely acknowledged that social distancing protocols that enforce small crowds — and require the use of face masks in public — will remain in effect.
Already, a range of big and small businesses around the country are actively implementing the post-lockdown “new normal.” It’s become a catchphrase that has defined public discourse since COVID-19 upended societal norms, and brought the global economy to its knees.

If you work from home you are pretty much non-essential.
That’s a great point. Lots of articles about how businesses will learn to “save money” by cutting down on on office space and having employees work from home, but they are really just shifting the cost onto their employees.
I am self-employed and utilize a “virtual office” with a downtown address while primarily working from home. It saves me a lot on my lease, but furnishing and equipping my home office wasn’t cheap, and the loss of a room in my house is a definite cost that doesn’t show up in my books. You can take a tax deduction, but the rules are complex and the IRS likes to scrutinize them. I know employees can sometimes take a deduction for their home offices as an I reimbursed expense, but I don’t know the rules on that.
I wonder how many newly-remote employees will demand compensation from their employers for the use of their home office. And given the current job market, I wonder how many employers will give them the finger.

Who listens to insurance companies? They’re useless leeches. The only reason insurance companies exist is because idiot politicians and stupid lenders have made insurance mandatory. Would love to see a listing of all the payoffs, kickbacks and bribes.
When I was working at Intel, only L1 managers and above got work from home permissions.
It took an act of God to get anyone else approved.
At one point in my project, I had a critical test which HAD to complete successfully and it took 12hrs to complete.
All I needed was to log in and check on it.
Instead, Intel demanded I drive to work at midnite, go to my office and check if it had completed.
I did that for almost 2 months.
Many have already crafted liability waivers.
I have seen people close to retirement, or working past retirement age, just hang it up over the past couple of months; here in NJ the government has made it clear they’d like to continue forever, so they know they won’t be working back at the office any time soon.
That’s the problem - so many people are just concerned about whether or not they’ll have a job when this is done, they feel they’re in no position to complain.
This attitude by employers, with unlimited access to imported Thirdworlders in NJ, is one of many reasons young professionals are fleeing the state in droves.
Few workers will have the guts to push for reimbursement; they’ll be lucky if they’re still working after this.
Couldn’t imagine how cities in particular recover from this; all the restrictions in the world wouldn’t help NYC as long as the subway is running, and the workforce can’t commute without it.
We’re allowed only 2 people on the boat and they must be family members.

The Harbormaster who, by the way, never leaves his office. The man is totally useless. We were also told that the Harbormaster’s office would not be available for help for boaters, again nothing new. We also can’t help our fellow boaters with their lines. This all goes back to our idiot governor who in his wisdom said businesses with face to face contact cannot open yet. Hello, what is a supermarket, Home Depot Lowe’s etc? Like I said a MORON!

I’m a senior software engineer for a large regional bank, keeping our ATM and POS systems operational, and the branch teller software too, while working from home. Non-essential? OK clyde.
I get that. I just buried my mother due to COVID. Everything was handled remotely and with Docu-sign.
But I also work in an engineering environment. Blue Prints, Job Files, Shop Instructions... I pretty much have to be hear to be able to do my job effectively.
