Between having had more than enough of the not-so-great indoors and realizing that the grocery store might not always have meat, Americans are increasingly looking to feed themselves by hunting.
People are thinking about where they get their food and how they get their food," Land Tawney, president of the advocacy group Backcountry Hunters and Anglers told High Country News for a story published April 29.
And people are acting, too.
Agencies that issue hunting licenses are reporting increases in many states, Reuters reported Sunday.
Indiana, for example, had a 28 percent increase in turkey license sales, Marty Benson, a spokesman for the states department of natural resources, said.

As with all spikes in firearm enthusiasm, I hope it is matched with TRAINING.
I suspect that this is really more of a leisure activity than fear of being unable to feed your family. Under normal circumstances, some people go into the woods, harvest some deer and fill their freezer. But most people do not. If “everyone” started doing that, we’d run out of deer in about a week. I would think that would be obvious, so I have a hard time thinking many people are adopting this as an actual strategy.
Deer are out of season and turkey hunting is one of the most difficult to master.
I did almost get a turkey on my way to work this morning. Crossing right in front of me, in very unexpected location.
It is hardly a cost effective way to get meat unless done in ones own back yard.
I have done cost analyst on my hunting for decades most of the time it is cheaper and easier to buy.
Deer around home on an resident tag is one that pays.
Also, Heaven’s Harvest seed kits. You mention WCGO Chicago / Franklin Show and get a pretty major discount. Non GMO heritage heirloom pre-WWII variety seeds - hearty and they MAKE FOOD FAST. I have almost an acre producing... And attracting deer.
People have more time to hunt.
I have numerous deer in my back yard every day, but I’m not an active hunter.
Already cleaned and wrapped and sliced.
...turkey hunting is one of the most difficult to master. Not in southern Indiana.
Just add a 12-gauge to your golf bag and profit.
Reminds me of the statement made a SJW that hunting and killing animals was barbaric. People shouldn’t kill animals. People should just go to the supermarket and get their meat there instead.
Yep. My wife has a 110 acre farm way out in the country to hunt on. My son has hunted deer there the past two years and has harvested one each year.
Sounds good to me as one morning I counted 10 deer walking through our property in a single file.
I’m in southern Indiana. I usually see turkeys from about a quarter mile away. No 12 gauge is going to hit that far.
Me too, if the darn John Deere would just go a little bit faster I might be able to just run one over.
There are so many turkeys here in southern NH you see them almost every day. Last year, I had two Jakes and two Toms spend the summer and fall at my place. They stayed on my side yard/field all day. At night they would roost in the White Pine trees out front. I have about 12 acres.
The reason hunting licenses are up is because people are home with nothing to do. It is no different than paint sales and home improvement projects. A local nursery said their April sales were an all time record. That is on top of a much colder than normal April. People are looking for anything to do.
What an idea!
Ok. A little sarc. Sorry.
As a 62 yr old woman I have found thru the years that a bit of hunting and fishing helps my grocery budget. Not to mention the relaxation and accomplishmemt :)
Not a pro, or a great hunter, but I enjoy it, get food and keep up my skills in the field and in the kitchen :)
It’s that bad. The left put 40 million people out of a job!
We have the right to hunt if we want to.
