Do we need debates? The choice between Trump and Biden is simple and stark.
Washington Post ^ | may 11, 2020 | hugh hewitt

Even if the aging influence of the Commission on Presidential Debates somehow holds up, voting in many states will be underway before President Trump faces off against former vice president Joe Biden

But Trump would be crazy to accept the commission’s schedule or its role in setting formats and moderators.

(SNIP)

It would be odd for Trump to agree to debate Biden under the authority of a commission deeply biased toward Beltway group think, no matter how confident he is that the former vice president lacks the energy to go two hours against him. But why walk into three ambushes?

(SNIP)

The good news is that debates may not be needed at all. Trump-Biden is a simple choice, already stark in five profound dimensions.

How about debate with no moderator?

Each party gets 5 minutes, back and forth.

The Democrat machines in virtually all the big cities will decide the election if not forestalled. The Cities do not report their vote count totals until after the rest of their states have reported and then each will add sufficient fake votes to overcome any Republican majority in the rest of its state. That was done in a few states previously but the Democrats see their case as a Revolution unfairly delayed and they will go all out this time. They lost the last election due to the incompetence of the Democrat machine in Broward County Florida. We cannot count on Democrat incompetence in ALL the big cities.

Trump should simply schedule debates with moderators of his choice and tell Biden he can show up if he wants to.

First of all... Hugh Hewitt’s a dope. If you’re listening to him you’re getting half-truths and misinformation.

However, debates need to be held so the American electorate can clearly see that Biden will not be making ANY decisions because he’s incapable of it. All of Biden’s admin would be handled by others and only using him as the face and the signature.

The left is really going all in to try to steal this election and I still don’t believe Biden will end up as their nominee.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! I’ve been hearing for some time that the Donkey’s master plan is to not hold a convention (so the Bernie Bros can’t riot) and to keep Gropey Joe hidden away and avoid a debate with Trump which they know he would lose - badly. Sure enough, we’re seeing the groundwork being laid already.

There is nothing to be gained by Trump by participating in the debate. He’s threatened to skip them, he should carry out his threat.

The fundamental flaw of the conventional TV debate_joint news conference_ is that it positions the moderator(s) as morally above the future president.

I would have debates in which the moderator function is simply a chess timer controlling which microphone is broadcast. The candidates themselves should be able to collectively moderate, IOW. In addition, there is no reason why the candidates shouldn’t have the ability to call up charts and graphs the provenance of which are stipulated by all in advance.

“Yes, we do need debates.”

No. If neither candidate were an incumbent President, you could make the argument that debates are needed - but President Trump needs no vetting or introduction. The voters have all the information they need regarding the President.

We do need some way to vet Joe Biden, since serving as Senator and VP doesn’t satisfy the public’s desire to see a candidate tested under fire.

But the fact that a challenger might benefit from a debate, should not obligate an incumbent to participate an exercise that can only help his opponent.
