Emiliano Zapata was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution. As a revolutionary, he commanded the Liberation Army of the South, an important brigade on a mission to force the Mexican government to return lands taken by the elite ruling class to local peoples. Zapata was known as an unrepentant champion of equality for the poor. His famous quote, “It’s better to die on your feet than live on your knees,” provides modern day scholars a view of his resolve for a cause that remains relevant in political debates.

Methinks that Zapata’s personal principles were not as heroic as those of William Travis or Davey Crockett at the Alamo.
Yessir. Same concept. Zapata’s statement fits the paradigm right now much better. And, he was truly a great leader for the people too.
You're thinking about Pancho Villa. He robbed people to give to his soldiers and was a crook and a murderer.

Zapata was imaged as a hero, but he really is being reconstructed by the academic American Left to suit their “fluid sexuality culture.” I do not respect revisionist history much, or the erection of ex pat Mexican nationalism is Texas.
Many Mexicans think the hero’s machismo and heroic rep are hollow.Making him into an American hero? Nah!

lol. No. He was one of very few good leaders in Mexico. Like nearly every good leader down there, he ended up dead.

I hadn’t heard that Jefferson quote before and it’s become one of my favorites.
He was a drunk who bandied about and was usually in a whorehouse when important things were happening, but Mexico’s revolution was nominally peaceful and certainly inevitable, and he was it’s willing and beloved hero.
What’s not to love? Better than Obama.
You guys aren't saying it with the proper flair, if I may offer a critique. History is fine, but allow me to offer this line from a great character in an okay movie that grows on you because of him.

other than driving a Norton Comando motorcylcle, Che’s life was a sordid waste of air.
